About the role:
The Unaccredited Junior Registrar (PGY3+) position at Western Health is designed to provide a structured and supportive environment for doctors seeking to enhance their skills in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
This role serves as a pathway for those aspiring to enter the RANZCOG specialist training program, pursue a career in GP-Obstetrics, or work as a Rural Generalist.
Registrars in this position will gain comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, contributing to essential service delivery while developing the experience and skills required for future training or career advancement.
The role enables participation in the Advanced Procedural Training Program (APTP), which supports those aiming for careers in GP-Obstetrics or as Rural Generalists.
Over a 12-month appointment, registrars will be integrated into the unaccredited registrar roster and receive dedicated support to meet key qualifications for these specialties.
Unaccredited registrars will also engage in the structured teaching program, which forms part of the accredited RANZCOG training, ensuring a focus on continuous professional development.
The position provides strong support for applicants pursuing vocational training, contingent on their commitment to service delivery and the demonstration of essential Obstetrics & Gynaecology skills.

About our services:
The Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is a purpose-built tertiary facility delivering care to over 7,000 women annually across Melbourne’s western region. The service is supported by Maternal Fetal Medicine, Obstetric Medicine, Obstetric Anaesthesia, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit caring for infants from 26 weeks gestation. Gynaecology services span general and subspecialty care, including gynaecological oncology, urogynaecology, and advanced minimally invasive surgery.
Bacchus Marsh Hospital provides a complementary lower-risk obstetric and gynaecology service, with continued growth in birthing numbers and expanding surgical and ambulatory care services.
Key responsibilities:
As an Unaccredited Junior Registrar, you can expect to gain experience in diverse areas, including:
- Providing care at Bacchus Marsh Hospital.
- Contributing as a junior registrar within one of our four team-based general O&G units.
- Managing labour ward and acute receiving duties.
- Participating in night duty (on call with senior support from a Level 5/6 Registrar).
- Elective Caesarean Section lists.
- Working in our Emergency Department Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EDOG) service.
- Contributing to the Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS).
- Conducting antenatal clinics.
- Working within the Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC).
- Participating in gynaecology outpatient clinics.
- Gaining surgical experience in gynaecology operating theatres (including minor procedures and potential co-rostering on more complex lists with RANZCOG trainees).
Furthermore, there may be opportunities to gain exposure to specialist services such as pelvic floor disorders, gynae-oncology, infertility, maternal-fetal medicine, and endoscopic surgery.
About you:
- A primary medical qualification (e.g., MBBS, MD) or equivalent, as recognised by AHPRA.
- Current medical registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) without any conditions on practice.
- A minimum of 18 months of experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the HMO, SHMO, or Junior Registrar level.

- It is preferable that at least one (1) referee must be from an Australian training hospital and the referee has been involved as a direct supervisor/line manager within the last 24 months.
