Are you ready to explore how seaweed extracts could transform cancer treatment?

Marine Bioproducts CRC is offering an exciting PhD opportunity focused on understanding how marine-derived compounds can target aggressive cancers and improve therapeutic outcomes.

PhD title: Effects of fucoidans in triple negative breast cancer Research degree: PhD

Scholarship: AU$60,000 per annum

Duration: 3.5 years

This project investigates the potential of fucoidans, naturally occurring compounds derived from brown seaweed, to inhibit vasculogenic mimicry in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). TNBC is an aggressive cancer subtype with limited treatment options, and new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed.

Based at Flinders University and working in collaboration with Marinova Pty Ltd, the project will explore how fucoidan extracts influence tumour behaviour, with a focus on disrupting tumour blood supply pathways and improving treatment effectiveness.

The successful applicant will work at the intersection of marine biotechnology, cancer biology, and bioproduct development, contributing to innovative approaches that combine marine science with human health outcomes.

Through this PhD, you will:

- Investigate the effects of fucoidan extracts on tumour growth, migration, and invasion in TNBC models

- Characterise the molecular mechanisms underlying inhibition of vasculogenic mimicry.

- Develop advanced in vitro models, including co-culture systems, to assess therapeutic potential.

- Explore combination strategies with existing anti-angiogenic therapies.

- Contribute to the development of new marine-derived therapeutic approaches.
