Join our Intensive and Critical Care Unit Team

We are looking for an ICU Registrar to join the team and help make a difference in Southern Adelaide's Local Community!

About the role:

Reporting to the Division of Medicine, Cardiac & Critical Care Director, this role is responsible for delivering comprehensive intensive care medicine to critically ill patients, participating in multidisciplinary care teams, contributing to clinical decision-making, and supporting ICU outreach services across the hospital network while advancing professional development through structured training programmes.
Duties for the role will include:
- Providing care and assuming responsibility for patients in the Critical Care Unit, under supervision of the Consultant.
- Conducting inpatient/or procedural consultations of patients including assessing, analysing, diagnosing, managing, treating, educating and supporting patients presenting to them. Ensure optimum outcomes by providing opinions in respect of diagnosis, attributability and assessment of inpatients and referrals as appropriate.
- Ensuring that administrative duties relating to the proper functioning of the unit and the hospital are carried out.
- Participating in Unit meetings and hospital committees including other Government and non-Government agencies as directed by the Unit Head, or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services or by the Chief Executive Officer.
- Participate in teaching of medical student at graduate and postgraduate levels. Assist in the development, administration and organisation of programs for teaching in these areas as directed by Unit Head or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services.
- Assisting with research activities as specified by the Unit Head or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services by conducting research and collaborating with other units within the hospital and other Critical Care units.
- In collaboration with other relevant staff, ensuring that services are continually evaluated and improved by participating in peer reviews, clinical reviews, quality improvement programs and using this information to compare and review outcomes.
About you:
- Bachelor of Medicine: Bachelor of Surgery (MBSS) or equivalent
- Registrable with Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner
- Registered with CICM as ICM trainee, if applying for trainee position
- Experience to include clinical work in the specialty, teaching and research
- Experience in MET (Medical Emergency Team)
- ICU and/or Anaesthesia experience with airway competence
- Effective communication skills both written and oral.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary setting.
- Proven level of skills to enable work in Critical Care.
- Ability to organise and conduct teaching and research in the Critical Care Unit
Assessment Criteria:

CICM trainee applications for Basic and Advance will be assessed based on progress in the training program. Examples of factors that reflect training progress are – time in training program, status of part 1 and 2 exams, experience outside intensive care such as anaesthetic time, status of research project and number of publications in peer reviewed journals. CICM trainee Applicants are requested to mention their training status, the role they are applying for – Basic or Advance and their plans for the next two years.

Service registrar: Assessment will include factors such as ICU and anaesthetic experience, exposure to Australian intensive care setup, active CPD relevant to acute care, procedural experience relevant to ICU and publications. CICM trainees with deferred training time may also be considered for this position. Service registrars will have relatively greater exposure of ICU outreach services within hospital.

As per the SMOEA 2022, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-month allocation as Advanced Trainee will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills, and capabilities.
