Primary objective
Provide legal and administrative support in relation to all court matters under the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007,
Youth Justice Act 2005 and other relevant legislation to ensure legislative and policy requirements are met. In consultation
with the Manager of Legal Services, support the Agency to meet its responsibilities and promote best practice around
compliance with the Agency’s legal obligations. The Legal Services Unit sits within the under Corporate and Enabling Services
Unit and ensures the Department of Children and Families is effectively and efficiently fulfilling its obligations under relevant
legislation.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist and ensure compliance in the preparation and filing of court applications in accordance with legislation, policy and

procedures.
2. Provide assistance to Departmental staff regarding the preparation for court proceedings and arrange legal advice and/or

representations where appropriate.
3. Assist in the resolution and case management of legal matters under supervision.
4. Support legal procedures and processes arising in respect of children subject to legal action involving the Department to

ensure timely and collegial liaison with all parties is maintained.
5. Assist in the development and monitoring of processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness relating to legal processes.
6. Support the capability of Departmental staff in relation to the preparation for court matters inclusive of time

management, record keeping, organisational skills and written communication.
7. Ensure the timely availability of accurate and reliable data and information utilising Departmental case management and

information management systems.
8. Other duties as required.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to interpret, understand and apply legislation, policy and procedures.
2. Knowledge of the issues, principles and practices in the areas of court processes.
3. Well-developed organisational skills with a proven ability to work in an environment of continuous change with attributes

of flexibility and adaptability.
4. Well-developed oral and written communication skills and ability to interact professionally with a range of internal and

external stakeholders.
5. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team to achieve timely outcomes while maintaining high standards

of accuracy and attention to detail.

Desirable
1. Tertiary qualifications in legal studies or current study towards such qualifications.
2. Knowledge of whole of government policies and procedures.
