About the team
The Women’s Mental Health Service comprises two full-time psychiatry registrars, consultant psychiatrists, consultation–liaison (CL) mental health clinicians, and clinical psychologists.
The service provides:
- A comprehensive consultation–liaison psychiatry service within a complex tertiary setting
- Specialist outpatient perinatal and gynaecology mental health care as well as the Women’s Alcohol and Drug Service (WADS)
There is a strong emphasis on teaching, supervision, and structured professional development, particularly for Stage 3 trainees.

About the role
The Psychiatry Registrar will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality and efficient consultation–liaison psychiatry service for women receiving care at the Royal Women’s Hospital. This role offers broad, complex, and clinically rich experience, with exposure to medically and psychosocially complex presentations across the lifespan. It is particularly well suited to trainees seeking to consolidate Stage 3 competencies, including formulation, risk management, and systems-based practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultation–liaison psychiatric assessment and management for inpatients and outpatients, including:
- Antenatal and postnatal patients
- Gynaecology and oncology patients
- Women’s health presentations across the hospital
- Families within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Develop and communicate clear biopsychosocial formulations and management plans in complex clinical scenarios
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support the care of women with mental health concerns
- Provide advice and consultation to medical, midwifery, and nursing colleagues
- Contribute to undergraduate teaching in women’s mental health
- Participate in the education and training of RWH staff, including medical, midwifery, and nursing colleagues
About you
We are ideally seeking a Stage 3 trainee, although exceptional Stage 2 trainees may be considered. You will bring strong clinical skills, the ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team, and confidence managing complex presentations within a consultation–liaison setting.
This role is well suited to trainees who are:
- Seeking to build depth in consultation–liaison and perinatal psychiatry
- Interested in developing advanced formulation and systems-based thinking
- Motivated to take on increasing responsibility within a supportive supervisory framework
The role requires:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- The ability to manage risk and clinical complexity
- Skills in de-escalation, containment, and supporting teams managing challenging presentations
Essential Criteria
- Registration as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA
- Current enrolment in the Victorian RANZCP Psychiatry Training Program
- Preferably a Stage 3 Advanced Trainee (Consultation–Liaison, Generalist, or Adult Psychiatry), though Stage 2 trainees will be considered
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively

The Classification and Salary scale will be dependent on experience, and you will be appointed and in accordance to the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Doctors in Training Agreement 2022-2026.
