Position Tagline
Canterbury Hospital is seeking a Provisional Fellow in Anaesthetics to join our medical team for the 2027 clinical year. This opportunity will support training doctors to meet the needs of the Canterbury patient population whilst developing expertise in a complex clinical environment.

Where you'll be working
Canterbury hospital is a 215-bed metropolitan acute general hospital in the Sydney Local Health District providing services in Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, General Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Aged Care, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care. The facility is also undergoing a $350M redevelopment for expansion of acute clinical services planned in 2027. The Canterbury area is home to a culturally and linguistically diverse community catering to patients with complex health problems and limited access to health care. Canterbury Hospital therefore offers a unique opportunity for doctors in training to develop hands-on clinical experience whilst learning in a supervised environment.

What you'll be doing

To allow Trainees to complete the requirements of training for Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, as specified in the College training program, whilst providing anaesthetic care to patients under the supervision of a nominated Consultant. This position allows for the development of skills required for independent practice in anaesthesia, exposure to one or more areas of anaesthesia subspecialty practice according to Trainee interest, as well as the opportunity to undertake non-clinical sessions for education, research and leadership roles as appropriate.

All decision-making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer’s skills, knowledge, and experience. The Trainee will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance and at the discretion of a supervising Consultant. All patients managed within SLHD are under the direct care of a Specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care should be clearly communicated with the Specialist responsible.

It is expected that the Trainee will achieve the following during their year in this fellowship position:

To gain skills in the pre-operative assessment and preparation of patients for surgery.
To gain experience in the organisation and coordination of emergency cases requiring surgery, and for providing anaesthesia in out-of-theatre locations.
To gain experience in a more independent style of anaesthetic practice by taking clinical responsibility commensurate with experience.
To obtain further specialised experience in an anaesthesia sub-specialty of the Trainee's choice.
To participate in after-hours rosters including the Liver Transplant and Obstetrics rosters.
To fulfil the educational and training requirements for trainees as a Provisional Fellow or for trainees in ATY2E (as specified by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists).
Participation in Medical Officer & Departmental teaching sessions.
To learn good presentation skills through education and research presentations and QA activities such as morbidity/mortality reviews and critical incident reports.
To learn basic research principles.
To gain experience in providing support for junior colleagues and peers.

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.

Adept verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.

Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.

Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of anaesthesia.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

Demonstrated previous experience in, and willingness to deliver, undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training and commitment to after-hours and on-call rosters.
