Primary objective
To assist teachers in implementing educational programs for a student who is blind or has vision loss and to provide feedback to teachers
to allow program modification and accurate assessments to be made.

Context statement
Dripstone Secondary Collage is located in the northern suburbs of Darwin. The school has a multicultural population of over 740 students.
Classroom teachers, the Special Education teacher, and Special Education Support Officers work collaboratively to enable students to
maximise their learning within school, home, and community settings. Families and community are integral to successful partnerships.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Work collaboratively with the Dripstone Secondary Collage staff to assist in the planning, preparation, implementation, and assessment

of individualised educational programs including effective strategies for students with profound vision impairment. Including operating
the computer Brailler to produce text for teachers to review and assess student work.

2. Effectively communicate with students, families and work colleagues whilst maintaining confidentiality.
3. Prioritise and perform work tasks in a reliable manner, both as a team member and independently whilst adhering to school and

department policies.
4. Provide ongoing feedback regarding the progress of individual students and contribution to the programming.
5. Assist with the supervision and instruction of students in classrooms, within one to one and small group situations as identified by the

Classroom teacher and in extra activities including excursions, camps and during recess and lunch as required.
6. Manage and complete a range of administrative tasks including word processing, data entry, developing resources, photocopying,

laminating, classroom displays, Non-Visual Desktop Access (NVDA), SAMS/COMPASS entry in a timely manner and other duties as
directed.

7. Support with the management of the collage’s online reading program, oversee advisor, NDIS support services and general SWAN
duties. Provide administrative support to the front office, the Principal and teaching staff including word processing, data entry,
maintaining the schools various communication platforms, administrative and other tasks as directed by the Business Manager.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proficient use of Braille and knowledge of augmentative and alternative communications methods.
2. Demonstrated understanding of cultural and educational considerations for students who are blind or have low vision.
3. Demonstrated ability to assist with students learning, educational progress and inclusion of students with vision impairments or the

ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
4. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and successfully develop effective partnerships with students,

parents, and colleagues.
5. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work successfully independently and as part of a team,

exercising sound judgement.
6. Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to show empathy, patience and work effectively in a dynamic and challenging

environment.
7. Ability to work effectively, with limited supervision and flexible team skills, in a fast-paced school environment, such as meeting

timeframes, passing on factual information clearly and representing the school to parents, families and community whilst maintaining
confidentiality.

Desirable
1. Certificate/ Diploma in Braille or similar.
2. Training in Orientation and Mobility.
3. NT Drivers Licence (and additional LR licence) or the ability to be able to obtain one.
