The Justice Alliance Metro (JAM) program works alongside young people involved with the youth justice system to support positive life outcomes, reduce reoffending and strengthen connections to family, community and support services.
About the Role
We are seeking a passionate and motivated Youth Mentor to join our Justice Alliance Metro (JAM) team based in Armadale.
This unique role is co-located within the Youth Justice Service and works closely with Youth Justice Officers to support young people with complex needs. Through mentoring, advocacy, case coordination and practical support, you will assist young people to achieve goals identified within their Youth Justice case plans and build the skills, confidence and connections needed for positive long-term outcomes.
Key Responsibilities-
Build positive, trusting relationships with young people involved in the youth justice system.

Mentor a caseload of up to eight young people, supporting them to achieve goals identified in their Youth Justice case plans.

Assist young people to develop life skills, improve health and wellbeing, and strengthen community connections.

Support young people to access specialist services and maintain engagement with supports.

Advocate on behalf of young people and help address barriers impacting their wellbeing and development.

Work collaboratively with Youth Justice Officers and other stakeholders to coordinate support and achieve positive outcomes.

Liaise with schools, health professionals, social workers, community services, families and other key supports where appropriate.

Maintain accurate client records, case notes, reports and outcome measures.

Contribute to case studies, program reporting and quality improvement activities.

Represent HOPE at stakeholder meetings, networking opportunities and community events.

You'll Need
Essential-
Certificate IV or Diploma (or currently studying with relevant experience) in Youth Work, Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Community Services or a related discipline; or
-
Minimum three years' experience in a relevant youth, justice, community services or related role.

Experience and/or willingness to work with at-risk young people with complex needs and challenging behaviours.

Demonstrated understanding of strengths-based, client-centred, trauma-informed and youth participation approaches.

Strong communication, relationship-building and problem-solving skills.
-
Strong organisational and administrative skills, including accurate record keeping and reporting.
-
Understanding of the challenges and experiences faced by vulnerable young people and their families.
Highly Desirable-
Experience in trauma-informed practice and therapeutic crisis intervention.

Knowledge of issues impacting young people involved with the Department of Justice.

Understanding of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and its impact on young people, or willingness to undertake training.

Experience working within the youth justice, mental health, AOD or community services sectors.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and culturally responsive practice.
Pre-Employment Requirements-
Current C or A Class Driver's Licence.

Current Working with Children Check.

Current National Police Clearance (within three months).

Department of Justice Clearance.

Current First Aid Certificate.
