The Role
We're looking for an R2 Commissioning Engineer to join our team. This position is office-based (not site based). You’ll work to plan and negotiate Test Plans, complete preparation and enablement works to ensure the projects are ready for testing, perform Hold Point testing, and prepare Hold Point reports to confirm GPS compliance and model validation. Your work will span commissioning new projects, testing existing projects undergoing plant changes or ongoing compliance activities, as well as investigating and troubleshooting performance issues on new and existing projects.
If you've spent time on site working on the commissioning of projects through cold commissioning, energisation, and hot commissioning, and are ready to move into an office-based role focused on performance testing and power system model validation, this is a natural next step. Equally, if you're an engineer with a strong power systems or controls background looking to specialise in R2 commissioning, we'd like to hear from you.
Responsibilities
- Support clients by providing commissioning management services to drive projects through the commissioning process from FAT, construction checks, cold-commissioning, energisation, hot-commissioning, R2 Hold Point testing, and performance testing.
- Prepare R2 Test Plans and negotiate them with AEMO and NSPs as per AEMO and project requirements.
- Complete test preparation and enablement activities to ensure projects are ready for testing (SCADA and control system checks and dry-run testing, Power Quality Metering checks, PPC and inverter functionality and inverter checks).
- Perform Hold Point testing (capability tests, power quality tests, reference step tests, external disturbance tests, dispatch tests, functional checks, etc).
- Prepare Hold Point reporting (stability checks, GPS compliance checks, model overlay preparation).
- Prepare R2 Model Validation reports as per AEMO requirements.
- Provide testing and reporting services for existing plants undergoing plant changes as per AEMO requirements (NER 5.3.9 and S5.2.2).
- Provide testing and reporting services for existing plants managing their ongoing compliance monitoring as per AEMO requirements.
- Complete investigations and troubleshooting to support clients to resolve performance issues on new and existing projects
- Work closely with AEMO and NSPs to progress projects through the R2 commissioning process to support our client’s requirements.
- Work closely with EPCs, OEMs, SCADA Providers, and other stakeholders to prepare projects for testing and resolve issues identified during testing.
- Identify and help mitigate risks to R2 commissioning schedule and compliance.
About You
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Power, or Control Engineering.
- 2+ years experience in grid compliance, commissioning, or power systems working on renewable energy projects (Solar PV, BESS, Wind, or hybrid).
- Working understanding of AEMO and NSP grid connection frameworks (R0/R1/R2).
- Familiarity with power systems modelling software (PSS/E and PSCAD preferred).
- Exposure to HV electrical systems, SCADA, and control systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a genuine interest in the detail behind power systems and control system.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, and the confidence to engage with AEMO, NSPs, EPCs, and OEMs.
