It's why over 75% of Fortune 500 companies trust us for their networks, whether on- or off-premises or in the cloud. Opengear is a global company with offices in Brisbane, Australia and Sandy, Utah.
At the core of our solution offering are fully custom hardware appliances — chip-down SoC PCB designs tightly integrated with custom enclosures and thermal systems, paired with secure, reliable and feature-rich platform firmware. These appliances are engineered to industrial-grade reliability standards for an IT sector that cannot afford downtime. The Brisbane hardware team is responsible for the complete platform, and the mechanical design work done here is integral to the performance, longevity and field reliability of every product we ship.
This role is in Brisbane, Australia (Hybrid).
Position
We are looking for an early-career Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineer to join our Brisbane hardware team, working alongside our Senior Mechanical Engineer and the broader hardware group. This role spans detailed design documentation, sheet metal enclosure design, cable harness and decal drawing specifications, thermal analysis, and ongoing improvements to our lab workflows and internal tooling.
What We Offer (Paragraph/Overview)
This is a practical, hands-on role. A meaningful portion of your time will involve 3D printing — both for product prototyping and for designing and producing internal tools, jigs, fixtures and lab organisation solutions. You will have real ownership of mechanical deliverables and be expected to bring initiative and care to everything from a connector cutout tolerance to a storage rack label.
The hardware team prides itself on quality and technology innovation, with a strong focus on continuous improvement. We are customer experience focused — we consider everyone who interacts with our appliances, physically or remotely, a customer of our team. That includes the assembly technicians who build them, the engineers who test them, and the field teams who deploy them. Good mechanical design is invisible when it works and costly when it doesn't — this team takes that seriously.
What You Will Do
Detailed Design and Documentation
- Produce detailed SolidWorks drawings and specifications for cable harness assemblies, including BOM-tracked components suitable for PLM entry
- Create and maintain decal and label drawings to support product marking and compliance requirements
- Design and develop sheet metal enclosures for new products and product variations — including connector cutout placement, tolerance studies and MCAD/ECAD synchronisation with Altium Designer — from concept through to DFM-ready release
- Document mechanical assembly workflows to support manufacturing, test and operations teams
Thermal Validation and Analysis
- Contribute to thermal validation activities, including supporting simulation runs under the guidance of senior engineers, and assisting with instrumented lab builds and environmental chamber testing
- Work with the electrical team to understand component power budgets and inform enclosure and airflow design decisions
Physical Workflows and Lab Operations
- Support physical product validation workflows including drop and vibration testing, assembly staging and packaging assessment
- Design and produce 3D-printed jigs, fixtures, cable retention solutions, storage and organisation tools, lab rack accessories and other internal use items
- Design and produce assembly jigs, test jigs, disassembly aids and other custom tooling to improve the experience and reliability of our manufacturing, test and production workflows. The team has a strong track record here — from custom storage and cable management solutions to printed alignment fixtures — and there is an ongoing pipeline of opportunities for someone who enjoys solving practical problems with good mechanical design
- Identify and drive workflow improvements across our hardware lab, test areas and production line — from floor layout and bench organisation through to tooling selection
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Actively participate in team continuous improvement activities — contributing ideas, engaging in retrospectives, and taking ownership of improvement tasks as your skills develop
- Own improvement projects from brief through to deployed solution, applying the same engineering discipline to an internal jig as to a customer-facing enclosure
- Collaborate with the electrical and systems test engineers to provide mechanical design support for internal test rigs, thermal emulators and lab hardware — bringing a mechanical perspective to problems that span disciplines
- For candidates with a Mechatronics background: there is scope to contribute beyond pure mechanical work — including supporting basic firmware and scripting tasks, automating mechanical or test workflows, and collaborating closely with the electrical and systems test engineers on cross-disciplinary improvements. This team values broad contribution and will not be short of work for someone who can operate across the boundary between mechanical and systems engineering
Who You Are and What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline
- Practical SolidWorks experience including part, assembly and drawing environments
- Experience or coursework in sheet metal design, GD&T and engineering drawing standards
- Understanding of DFM principles for sheet metal fabrication and machined components
- Hands-on approach — comfortable working in a lab environment with physical prototypes, test builds and bench tooling
- Organised and methodical, with the ability to produce clean, consistent technical drawings and documentation
Desired But Not Required
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM or similar vault/revision control systems
- Exposure to FDM 3D printing — slicer software, material selection, design-for-print considerations
- Experience with or genuine interest in engineering simulation — thermal (e.g. SolidWorks Flow Simulation, FloEFD) and structural (e.g. SolidWorks Simulation) are the most directly applicable
- Experience with cable harness design or overmoulded connector/strain relief specifications
- Familiarity with MCAD/ECAD co-design workflows (SolidWorks Altium or similar)
- Basic Linux, networking or Python scripting familiarity — useful for thermal testing workflows and lab automation; we will support development in this area during onboarding
- Experience with injection moulding or extrusion design — applicable to connector housings, shrouds and custom enclosure components
Seniority Guide
- We are open to hiring at either Engineer I or Engineer II level. Engineer I candidates are typically recent graduates or have up to 2 years of relevant experience; structured mentorship and development support is provided. Engineer II candidates typically bring 2–4 years of relevant industry experience and will be expected to work more independently on assigned mechanical deliverables.
