Full Job Description

About the role

Byron Shire Council are seeking an Engineering Surveyor to deliver high‑quality, accurate and timely survey services that support engineering design, capital works and maintenance programs across Byron Shire Council. Reporting to the Team Leader Survey and Design, this role plays a critical part in enabling the successful planning, delivery and completion of infrastructure projects that benefit the community. Recent surveying graduates are encouraged to apply!

You will work closely with internal stakeholders, consultants, contractors and government agencies, applying contemporary surveying techniques and technologies while contributing to a culture of safety, collaboration and continuous improvement.

Note: This role is based in the Byron Shire of Northern NSW. We are open to considering candidates for relocation, so are extending our search to professionals based in other metropolitan areas who may be seeking better work-life balance and a lifestyle change. This role offers the opportunity to trade the city commute for a relaxed coastal lifestyle, meaningful local projects, and a supportive regional council environment.

Relocation assistance may be available for eligible candidates, in line with Council’s relocation policy.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Bachelor's degree in engineering surveying or equivalent spatial science
Demonstrated experience in engineering, cadastral, topographic and related surveying disciplines
Demonstrated working knowledge in GIS mapping systems, metro counter classifiers, CAD Software, 12D Software, GPS and mobile devices
The ability to interpret engineering and survey plans and produce accurate survey outputs
Sound organisational skills with the ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks
Well‑developed communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer‑focused approach
A strong commitment to Work Health & Safety, environmental management and safe work practices
A current Class C Driver Licence and Construction Induction (White Card)
Registration as a Surveyor (desirable) and relevant traffic control qualifications (or willingness to obtain)

Key responsibilities:

Provide accurate survey information for base plots, cadastral investigations, set‑out works and works‑as‑executed plans
Undertake engineering and construction surveys in support of capital works and maintenance projects
Operate and maintain survey equipment, ensuring efficient and responsible use of resources
Provide technical surveying advice to internal teams and external stakeholders
Assist with minor design work and quantity calculations as required
Collect, process and report on traffic data, supporting traffic and transport activities
Liaise with government agencies, contractors and community stakeholders on survey‑related matters
Ensure all work is delivered safely, within budget and in accordance with policies, procedures and legislation
Contribute positively to team culture, continuous improvement initiatives and organisational objectives

Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award with appointment at a salary in the range of $84,310 to $97,686 (dependent upon skills and experience)
12% Superannuation
