Full Job Description

What You'll Do

As a Database Officer, you'll play a key role in enhancing the quality, accessibility and scientific value of the State Botanical Collection. Working with herbarium specimens, you'll apply your attention to detail and research skills to verify and update taxonomic information, interpret specimen data, and accurately capture records within the collection database. You'll draw on a range of resources, including scientific literature, maps and historical references, to resolve incomplete or complex information and support the ongoing curation of one of Australia's most significant botanical collections. Beyond data management, you'll contribute to the continuous improvement of collection management practices, systems and procedures, ensuring work aligns with industry standards and organisational requirements. You'll collaborate closely with colleagues across the Collections Branch and broader organisation, support reporting and planning activities, and help build knowledge of the collection through stakeholder engagement opportunities such as tours, presentations and educational content. You'll play an important role in maintaining the integrity and accessibility of the State Botanical Collection, helping to ensure its value for researchers, conservationists and future generations.

What You'll Bring

You bring a strong foundation in botanical science, supported by relevant qualifications or equivalent experience, along with a genuine interest in the management and preservation of scientific collections. Your knowledge of botanical nomenclature, herbarium practices and relevant scientific literature enables you to work confidently with specimen data and contribute to the integrity of collection records. You are comfortable navigating historical and complex information, including interpreting handwritten labels and researching supporting sources to ensure data accuracy. Highly organised and detail-oriented, you thrive in environments that require precision, consistency and the ability to manage large volumes of work. Your experience working with relational databases and Microsoft Office applications, combined with your analytical mindset and proactive approach to problem-solving, allows you to deliver high-quality outcomes with minimal supervision. Most importantly, you're a collaborative team member who communicates effectively, builds positive working relationships and enjoys contributing to shared goals within a scientific and collections-focused environment.
