Employment Opportunity
This is an ongoing opportunity for an EL2 to join the Office of Corporate Counsel within the People and Strategy Division and the Attorney-General’s Department.
The Office of Corporate Counsel (OCC) provides internal general legal advice and guidance on a non-billable basis to all divisions in the department, other than the Australian Government Solicitor. The work covers a broad range of legal issues, including statutory interpretation, delegations and authorisations, appointments, finance law, administrative law issues, procurements and grants, inter-agency arrangement, and the department’s responsibilities under various legislation applicable to Commonwealth agencies. OCC also provides general guidance to divisions to support their engagement of external legal services providers, management of claims and litigation and responding to subpoenas.
In this role, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the department, its people, programmes, policies, strategic priorities and the legislative frameworks in which they operate. You will also have a broad understanding of areas of law relevant to the activities of government and the department. You will have the opportunity to build strong relationships with line areas, anticipate problems, consider systematic impacts and have a strong grasp of key issues to deliver successful outcomes. You will encourage collaboration and champion the benefits of a workforce with diverse experience, education and backgrounds.
This role will have a particular focus on supporting the department’s implementation and management of the Identity Verification Service (IVS). This will draw on your background and experience in advising on legislative frameworks, information management, statutory interpretation, inter-government agreements, contracts and public law and the intersection between legal principles and technology in the context of this important government program.
