About The Organisation

AMSANT is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services in the Northern Territory and advocates for equity in health, focusing on supporting the provision of high-quality comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal communities.

Contract Duration: Fixed term for 6 months

Contract Type: Full-time (part-time negotiable) (0.8-1.0 FTE negotiable – up to 38 hours per week)

Work hours: Monday-Friday 08:00am - 04:30pm

Location: Darwin or Alice Springs

Salary: $125,485.11 - $140,777.72 pro-rata plus superannuation

Role description

This position will provide registrars with excellent opportunity to develop public health skills in an Aboriginal community-controlled environment. This position will contribute to the AMSANT public health unit across a range of areas including public health approaches and clinical system development within primary health care, communicable disease control and policy, advocacy and research. The position will also undertake project work with previous examples including needs analysis focusing on antenatal care and a review of syphilis testing in pregnancy. The work plan for this position will be flexible depending on existing skills, experience, interest and training needs of the successful applicant. The position will be supervised by an experienced public health physician and be based in a supportive public health team.

Responsibilities

Contribute to clinical system development within ACCHSs and across the Aboriginal Primary Health Care (PHC) system in the NT.
Provide public health support to member services and the sector as a whole as part of the public health team
Contribute to public health policy and advocacy work as part of the public health team
Undertake 1- 2 major projects in a research/policy/primary health care development that advances the interests of the community-controlled sector in the NT and potentially at the national level
Review research proposals according to the AMSANT research policy for their potential to contribute to Aboriginal PHC capacity and improvement in health outcomes
Provide advice and support to senior clinicians in the sector on public health /primary health care system issues.
Represent the sector at key meetings and ensure advice is reflective of the views of the sector.
Contribute as an active member of the AMSANT Public Health team.
Attend all staff and team meetings as required by AMSANT

SELECTION CRITERIA (QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES)

Essential

Eligible for medical registration in the NT

Currently enrolled or eligible to enrol in the Australian Faculty of Public Health Medicine training scheme

Proven verbal and written communication skills suited to a cross-cultural environment and communication with government and other non-government organizations.

An interest in developing public health skills and competencies related to Aboriginal primary health care

Capacity to work in an Aboriginal community-controlled organization including an ability to take direction from Aboriginal management and to work co-operatively in a cross-cultural environment.

Desirable

Clinical and/or public health experience in Aboriginal primary health care

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
