About the Team
The Adult Sleep Laboratory is part of the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at John Hunter Hospital and is conveniently located on Level 2 near the hospital's main entrance.
Our purpose-built laboratory features six fully equipped sleep study bedrooms and operates Monday to Thursday nights, providing diagnostic and treatment services for patients experiencing sleep disorders and respiratory failure. The team includes Sleep Physicians, Nurses, Sleep Scientists, Technicians and Administrative Staff who work collaboratively to deliver high-quality patient-centred care.

About the Role
As a Sleep Technician Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting overnight sleep investigations and ensuring patients receive safe, professional and compassionate care throughout their sleep study experience.
Working overnight shifts from 7:30pm to 7:30am, you will be responsible for preparing patients for sleep studies, continuously monitoring sleep data throughout the night, maintaining high-quality data acquisition and assisting with treatment and therapy support.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing patients for sleep investigations, including equipment setup and patient education
- Monitoring sleep study recordings overnight and ensuring accurate data collection
- Adjusting therapeutic respiratory devices in accordance with established protocols
- Providing support and education to patients using CPAP and other respiratory therapies
- Completing accurate and timely sleep study documentation and reports
- Responding to patient needs throughout the investigation process
- Communicating effectively with medical, nursing, scientific and administrative staff to support patient care
This position reports directly to the Senior Scientist In-Charge/Laboratory Manager.
About You
We are seeking a motivated and reliable individual who enjoys working independently while delivering exceptional patient care in a specialised clinical environment.
You will bring:
- The ability to work 12-hour overnight shifts from 7:30pm to 7:30am
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse range of patients
- Well-developed computer skills and confidence using Windows-based systems
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- The ability to manage competing priorities in a busy clinical environment
- A professional, compassionate and patient-focused approach
Previous experience in sleep medicine is not essential. We are looking for someone with the right attitude, aptitude and willingness to learn.
Essential Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- A relevant degree in Science, Applied Science, Biomedical Engineering or another qualification deemed equivalent by the employer, and/or relevant experience in a sleep disorders unit or similar clinical environment
- Eligibility to drive in New South Wales
- A current First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one
Training and Development
No prior sleep laboratory experience? No problem.
Comprehensive in-house education and training will be provided during your first month, including:
- Patient preparation and electrode placement techniques
- Sleep study monitoring and data acquisition
- Sleep stage recognition and interpretation
- Understanding sleep-disordered breathing conditions
- CPAP and respiratory therapy support
- Laboratory systems, protocols and procedures
You'll be supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team committed to helping you develop specialist skills in sleep medicine.
What you'll be doing
Provide high quality sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment service to patients and carers admitted to the John Hunter Hospital Sleep Disorder & Respiratory Failure Service sleep laboratory.
