The Senior Systems Engineer – Networks OSS & Enterprise Integration (SSE) is accountable for the software development, configuration, and ongoing enhancement of OSS Assurance, Service Management, and Enterprise Integration Systems within the Networks OSS division, building and maintaining enterprise-grade OSS Assurance, Service Management, and Enterprise Integration platforms developed on Java / J2EE and related technology stacks. The SSE operates as a senior hands-on engineering practitioner with expert-level capability in Java / J2EE and relational database design, and broad proficiency across modern integration middleware, containerisation, CI/CD tooling, observability platforms, and front-end frameworks.
What You’ll Do
While primarily a hands-on software engineering role, the SSE collaborates closely with Business Analysts, Solution Designers, Solution Architects, Project and Product Managers, and Platform Owners to translate business requirements into implemented solutions. Key responsibilities include:
- Hands-on software design and development for custom builds and product customisation, translating high-level designs into component-level implementation.
- Provision of L3 Solution Support for OSS Operations during major incidents, delivering corrective fixes requiring in-house software development or configuration change.
- Management of source code, CI/CD pipelines, build and deployment tooling, and all non-production environments (Dev, Test, UAT, SIT), ensuring alignment with production environments (Prod, DR, PPT).
- Leveraging observability and APM tooling (Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack) to monitor platform health and drive corrective action before service impact occurs.
- Management of supplier personnel and deliverables where development is outsourced, ensuring source code ownership is retained by Optus upon handover.
- Input into sourcing activities (RFI, RFQ, RFT) in collaboration with Legal, Procurement, and internal SMEs.
- Leading small teams of developers (vendor or contractor) as required to deliver custom build projects.
What You’ll Bring
- Degree in Telecommunications, Electrical, or Computer / Software Engineering.
- Minimum 10 years’ professional experience in software development / engineering.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in management of ITIL Service Management platforms and solutions.
- Expert in Java / J2EE application development and relational database design, schema optimisation, and query performance.
- Proficient across Python, Groovy, Go Lang, and JavaScript, with knowledge of front-end frameworks (React, AngularJS).
- Expertise in ITIL Service Management platforms and solutions (ServiceNow or equivalent ITIL Service Management platform).
- Knowledge of OSS Assurance sub-domains: fault, performance, configuration, service, and customer experience management.
- Knowledge of integration middleware and messaging patterns: Apache Kafka, Apache NiFi, REST APIs.
- Knowledge of container and orchestration platforms (Docker, Kubernetes) and sufficient knowledge of infrastructure and virtualisation concepts to select from a catalogue of options to build resilient solutions.
- Knowledge of CI/CD tooling and release management: Ansible, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins.
- Knowledge of observability and APM tooling: Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack / OpenSearch.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills across all levels, from line management to executive leadership.
- Intermediate knowledge of Capex / Opex planning and contract management.
