About the Role
As a Tech Lead – Java Backend, you'll drive technical excellence across the full software development lifecycle. You'll set architectural direction, collaborate with business and technology leaders to deliver innovative backend solutions, and play a leading role in our Tech Lead Community of Practice. Embedded in a cross-functional agile team, you'll mentor diverse developers while owning the technical standards and outcomes within your domain.

Solve real problems with smart design — craft innovative, fit-for-purpose solutions that tackle business challenges head-on while staying true to our architectural vision and technology strategy

Own the architecture — leverage your depth of experience to influence and shape solution designs that drive our modern, scalable backend forward

Be our industry radar — stay ahead of the curve by tracking emerging trends, validating their relevance, and championing the ones that will move the needle for our operations

Shape how we build — take ownership of evolving our internal backend development practices and the applications within your domain, leaving a lasting mark on how we work

Build the foundations — play a hands-on role in maturing our CI/CD pipeline and AWS deployment infrastructure, enabling faster, more reliable delivery

Collaborate and deliver — work side-by-side with a passionate, cross-functional Agile team across design, development, deployment, and support — your contribution matters at every stage

Experience we are keen to see
Technical Expertise

Expert-level Java development with deep proficiency in Spring Boot and Spring Cloud Microservices frameworks

Extensive hands-on experience building, deploying, maintaining, and supporting microservices at scale

Strong command of SQL and ORM technologies, with a sharp eye for data design and performance

Extensive experience with AWS Developer Tools, cloud deployment, and containerisation using Docker

Proven ability to configure and leverage application and system monitoring tools to maintain platform health
Architecture & Delivery

Demonstrated experience identifying improvement opportunities, proposing solutions, and driving business cases through to endorsement

Solid track record producing technical documentation including high-level and low-level designs, UML diagrams, user guides, and system documentation

Confident working across the Atlassian suite — Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket
Leadership & Collaboration

A natural ability to build strong relationships with senior stakeholders and translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences

Passionate about coaching and mentoring others, sharing knowledge to uplift the team and the broader business

A champion of software security best practices, setting the standard across your domain
Advantageous

Experience in financial services applications

Familiarity with the IBM "I" platform and/or DB2
