The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Care & Protection/Family Law Practice, you’ll contribute to the delivery of high‑quality, culturally safe legal services by coordinating daily research, file management, drafting and liaison tasks that strengthen outcomes for Aboriginal children, families and communities. You help ensure matters progress smoothly through organised, ethical and community‑centred paralegal practice. Each day, you will:
- Coordinate comprehensive paralegal tasks including case preparation, court assistance, note‑taking, research, drafting and client interviews across Care & Protection/Family Law matters.
- Prepare and manage documentation by gathering evidence, drafting affidavits and applications, producing briefs and correspondence, and maintaining accurate, confidential files and statistical data.
- Liaise with key stakeholders including courts, DCJ, government and non‑government agencies, welfare services and legal professionals to progress client matters.
- Deliver essential administrative functions such as scanning, photocopying, collating documents, managing communications and ensuring orderly office workflows.
- Contribute to ethical, culturally grounded practice by upholding ALS policies, respecting cultural protocols, maintaining professional competence and prioritising safety.
- Work collaboratively within the practice to ensure efficient team operations, shared service delivery and alignment with ALS values and objectives.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated paralegal who brings cultural awareness, professionalism and deep respect for the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You combine strong technical capability with a commitment to ethical, community‑centred practice. Your work helps ensure families receive organised, high‑quality and culturally safe legal assistance. Key strengths include:
- Hold relevant paralegal or law qualifications with developing capability in Care & Protection and Family Law.
- Understand issues impacting Aboriginal families involved in the care and protection system, including cultural, social and systemic factors.
- Apply strong knowledge of referral pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across Care & Protection and Family Law.
- Demonstrate strong research and problem‑solving skills with the ability to analyse information and prepare accurate written material.
- Communicate clearly in writing and verbally including drafting reports, documents and client‑focused correspondence.
- Work independently with solid digital capability using Microsoft Office and video‑conferencing tools while managing administrative tasks efficiently.
