## Engineering Patternmaker
## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Engineering Patternmaker to join our team and contribute to the production of high-quality engineering patterns and models used across manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and fibreglass industries. This role involves constructing full-size engineering models — predominantly from timber and composite materials — that serve as the foundation for metal castings, copy models, vacuum form tooling, and specialised industrial tooling. The ideal candidate brings strong technical aptitude, precision craftsmanship, and a thorough understanding of engineering drawings and manufacturing processes. You will thrive in a hands-on production environment where accuracy, problem-solving, and attention to detail are paramount.
## Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and analyse engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation to determine dimensions, tolerances, and construction requirements for patterns and models
- Measure and mark out timber, metal stock, and castings using a range of precision gauges and layout instruments, ensuring accuracy from the outset of each job
- Shape and machine timber, metal, and composite materials using hand tools, machine tools, and other specialist equipment to produce patterns to exacting standards
- Verify the accuracy of manufactured articles and completed patterns against fine tolerances using precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, vernier callipers, and gauges
- Fabricate fibreglass patterns by pouring and spreading materials into moulds, building laminations of fibreglass cloth, and applying plastic resin to construct durable composite tooling
- Assemble pattern sections and fit work pieces to specified finishes, ensuring all components align correctly and meet design intent
- Apply protective coatings and finishes to completed patterns, and paint pattern sections to indicate correct assembly sequencing and orientation
- Test and modify manufactured articles to confirm they meet required specifications, making adjustments to compensate for casting defects or production variables
- Repair and restore broken or damaged patterns, and correct existing patterns to address dimensional or structural deficiencies
- Construct templates used for layout, inspection, and quality verification purposes throughout the production process
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, and production staff to resolve technical issues and ensure patterns are delivered on time and to specification
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work area in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements and site standards
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Completion of a recognised trade qualification or apprenticeship in Engineering Patternmaking, Boilermaking, or a related engineering discipline
- Demonstrated experience working as an Engineering Patternmaker in a manufacturing, foundry, automotive, aerospace, or fibreglass environment
- Proficient in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications
- Competent in the use of machine tools, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments relevant to the trade
- Sound knowledge of timber, metal, and composite materials and their properties in a patternmaking context
- Experience with fibreglass lamination techniques and the application of resins and protective finishes
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with the ability to work consistently to tight tolerances
- Strong problem-solving skills with the capacity to identify defects and implement practical corrections
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced production environment
- Current or ability to obtain relevant workplace safety certifications (e.g. White Card or site-specific inductions)
## Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate III or higher in Engineering Patternmaking or a closely related trade qualification recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework
- Experience across multiple industry sectors, including automotive, aerospace, or marine fibreglass manufacturing
- Familiarity with CAD software or 3D modelling tools used in pattern design and development
- Exposure to CNC machining operations and their application in pattern production
- First Aid certification or relevant workplace health and safety qualifications
- Experience working within quality management systems such as ISO 9001 or similar frameworks
