Our Technology team is the backbone of the business, building and maintaining the information technology infrastructure that support Coles Group. A Principal Engineer is the technical conscience and strategic enabler across multiple teams balancing hands-on depth with organisation-wide influence. This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for:

Guiding engineering across multiple squads and platforms

Acting as a trusted advisor on architecture and technology decisions

Driving scalable, resilient, and enterprise-aligned solutions

Bridging engineering, architecture, product, and business strategy

Provide technical leadership, mentorship and coaching across multiple engineering squads, helping engineers and technical leads grow their technical capability
-
Lead architecture and evolution of loyalty platforms, including membership, rewards, benefits, and partner ecosystems

Design scalable solutions supporting high-volume customer interactions and transactions
-
Drive modernisation toward API-first, event-driven loyalty architectures
-
Experience designing and delivering large-scale, distributed and highly available systems in complex enterprise environments

Demonstrated expertise in Azure cloud services and best practices across architecture, security, governance, and operations
-
Strong understanding of software architecture, integration patterns, APIs, event-driven systems and cloud-native design principles
-
A minimum of 10 years' experience in software engineering, solution design or technical leadership role

Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership across multiple teams, products or technology domains

Deep expertise in Azure cloud technologies, including cloud architecture, security, networking, observability and platform services

Strong hands-on experience with Java, Kotlin and .NET technology stacks and modern application development practices

Experience evaluating technology vendors, platforms and commercial solutions

Proven ability to mentor engineers and technical leads, fostering engineering capability and technical excellence

Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence technical decisions across multiple levels of the organisation

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline
