Role Purpose
The Senior Software Engineer Consultant is responsible for designing, building and delivering high‑quality software solutions across complex client environments. This role combines strong hands‑on engineering capability with a consulting mindset, working closely with client stakeholders, architects, testers and delivery teams to deliver scalable, maintainable and outcome‑focused solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Software Engineering & Delivery
· Design, develop and maintain software solutions using modern engineering practices
· Contribute across the full software development lifecycle (requirements, design, build, test and deploy)
· Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code aligned to agreed standards
· Build and support APIs, services and system integrations
· Troubleshoot and resolve complex defects, performance issues and incidents
Technical Leadership
· Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers
· Participate in and contribute to code and design reviews
· Support implementation of architectural standards and non-functional requirements
· Influence engineering best practices and continuous improvement initiatives
Consulting & Stakeholder Engagement
· Operate as a trusted technical consultant within client delivery teams
· Communicate technical concepts clearly to business and non-technical stakeholders
· Support estimation, planning and delivery reporting
· Adapt to different client environments, tools and delivery methodologies
Quality & Continuous Improvement
· Collaborate with quality and testing teams to ensure robust, testable solutions
· Support CI/CD pipelines and modern delivery practices
· Identify delivery risks early and contribute to mitigation strategies
Skills & Experience
Qualifications
This role would normally require a level of qualification equivalent to an AQF Bachelor Degree or higher. Alternatively at least 5 years of relevant work experience can substitute for the formal qualification.
Essential
· 6–10+ years’ experience as a Software Engineer in enterprise or consulting environments
· Strong experience in one or more programming languages (e.g. Java, C#, .NET, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python)
· Experience building scalable applications, APIs or integrated systems
· Solid understanding of software engineering principles and design patterns
· Experience working in Agile or hybrid delivery environments
· Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Desirable
· Cloud experience (AWS, Azure and/or GCP)
· Front-end frameworks (React, Angular, Vue)
· CI/CD, DevOps or infrastructure-as-code experience
· Experience on large-scale transformation or modernisation programs
· Background in regulated industries (Finance, Utilities, Government, Health)
