Do you have a knack for transforming plastic into high-quality products? As a
Materials Technician, you'll play a vital role in aspects of plastic fabrication.
What You'll Do:
o Conduct routine testing, inspection and analysis of plastic materials,
polymers and fabricated components to verify quality, durability and
compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
o Perform calibration, maintenance and operational checks on plastic
fabrication, welding and testing equipment across workshop, site and
mobile units.
o Inspect welding, fabrication and heat treatment processes to ensure
compliance with engineering drawings, technical specifications, quality
requirements and workplace safety procedures.
o Set up, operate and maintain specialised plastic welding and fabrication
equipment used for the manufacture, repair and installation of industrial
plastic products and piping systems.
Weld poly-ethylene and other thermoplastic fittings and components in
accordance with technical drawings, welding procedures and client
requirements.
o Conduct dimensional measurements and quality assurance checks using
precision measuring instruments including callipers, micrometres, gauge
blocks and height/depth gauges.
o Monitor welding temperatures, material tolerances and fabrication
conditions to ensure consistency, structural integrity and superior weld
quality.
o Assist in the manufacture, assembly, installation and repair of plastic
piping systems, tanks, fittings and fabricated components used in
industrial applications.
o Identify defects, material faults and equipment issues, and recommend
corrective actions to maintain production quality and operational
efficiency.
o Maintain testing records, calibration reports, inspection documentation
and maintenance logs in accordance with company and regulatory
requirements.
o Support the Operations Manager in implementing continuous
improvement initiatives to refine fabrication methods, improve
manufacturing consistency and increase operational efficiency.
o Assist with evaluating the suitability and performance characteristics of
various plastic materials including HDPE, PP, PVC, ECTFE, PTFE and
PVDF for specific operational applications.
o Coordinate routine servicing and preventative maintenance of fabrication
and welding equipment to minimise downtime and ensure safe operation.
o Participate in on-site installation, commissioning and troubleshooting of
fabricated plastic systems and associated equipment.
o Ensure all work is completed in accordance with workplace health and
safety legislation, company policies, environmental procedures and duty
of care obligations.
o Promote and maintain a strong safety culture by complying with safe
work procedures, hazard reporting requirements and risk management
practices.
o Liaise with supervisors, clients and team members regarding technical
requirements, fabrication specifications, testing outcomes and
operational schedules.
o Assist with stock control and the safe handling, storage and
transportation of materials, tools and fabrication equipment.
o Operate forklifts and workshop equipment safely and in accordance with
licensing and operational requirements.
o Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop and worksite
environment at all times.
Who You Are:
● Experienced Technician: Minimum of 3 years' experience. Familiarity with a
variety of plastic materials like HDPE, PP, PVC, ECTFE, PTFE, and PVDF is a plus.
Associate Degree or Advanced Diploma or Diploma in Materials Engineering or
equivalent
● A Measurement Maestro: Proficiency in using calipers, gauge blocks,
micrometers, and height/depth gauges to ensure precise measurements.
● The Blueprint Whisperer: Proven ability to read and understand drawings,
instructions, and geometric tolerances.
● Communication is Key: Clear and effective communication with coworkers and
supervisors is essential.
