Where you'll be working
Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states. The Westmead Health Precinct currently under development is envisaged to be the largest hospital building project undertaken in Western Sydney and will transform the iconic but ageing Westmead Hospital into an innovative, contemporary, and integrated centre that will continue to deliver high quality healthcare and expand the education, health, and research capability of the area.

Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology including Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services.

Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.

The Westmead Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the largest in NSW with 24 intensive care beds and 20 special care beds. The department admits over 1,500 newborns per year of which approximately 450 require airway support and 150 are born at less than 32 weeks gestation. The NICU has a strong relationship with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine team and the University of Sydney. Westmead Hospital delivers newborns who have complex surgical and cardiac conditions who are transferred to the co-located Children’s Hospital at Westmead for subspecialist treatment after initial stabilisation. Westmead Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit also receives ex-utero neonatal transfers from across NSW and within the district. The department is very active in teaching, clinical practice improvement and research. Westmead NICU offers comprehensive supervised training in clinician performed neonatal ultrasound to interested candidates. The department provides training in neurodevelopmental follow-up to high risk NICU graduates in a multidisciplinary clinic, up to the age of 5 years.

What you'll be doing
WSLHD - Senior Registrar - Neonatology

Participate in the supervision of Neonatal Trainees as they provide all aspects of care for infants within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Special Care Nursery and Maternity Ward under the supervision of the Staff Specialists

Undertake clinical responsibilities on a rotational basis across NICU, SCN, Growth and Development Clinic and other outpatient clinics such as short term follow-up of recently discharged patients and antenatal consultations for women with expected high risk delivery.

Attend ward rounds and participate with the Staff Specialist in developing management plans for each patient. In the NICU, a Staff Specialist and Senior Registrar/Fellow will usually undertake twice daily ward rounds with medical and nursing staff, and a once daily round in the SCN.

Provide and supervise clinical care including admission, physical examination, performance of clinical procedures, formulation of investigations and management plans, review of progress, discharge planning, arrangement of safe inter-hospital transfers, completion and checking of all discharge summaries, maintenance of medical documentation in the electronic medical record, and liaising with families.

Perform technical procedures including basic and advanced neonatal resuscitation, all aspects of ventilation of the newborn, intravenous cannulation, insertion of peripheral arterial lines, umbilical lines and peripherally inserted central catheters, lumbar puncture, suprapubic aspiration of urine, endotracheal intubation, insertion of chest drains, exchange transfusion, interpretation of bedside aEEG monitoring.

Participate in the first on call roster. A Provisional Fellow or Senior Registrar is usually first on call for clinical advice and emergency call back, with a Staff Specialist second on call and available. Rostered shifts are required when first on call for weekends, and rostered evening shifts may be required to meet service needs.

Participate in outpatient consultations within the department’s clinics including the completion of follow-up report writing under the supervision of a Staff Specialist.

Participate, plan, lead and monitor the implementation of new practices aimed at improving the quality of care provided within the department, including the development of new guidelines according to best evidence.

Participate actively in quality improvement, morbidity and mortality review, and peer review activities within the hospital.

Participate actively in clinical or laboratory research relevant to the department and neonatal medicine.

Participate and assist in the planning and delivery of appropriate education and training in neonatal medicine, including information sessions for parents.

Training Opportunities
Applicants for this position are usually seeking experience in a very busy tertiary perinatal unit, with a view to a future career in neonatology. Applicants have the opportunity to develop clinical skills in bedside neonatal ultrasound. Senior registrars will also gain valuable experience in developmental assessment and follow-up of high risk graduates from the NICU. Research opportunities will be offered to successful applicants.

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category

Possess full fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians at time of application..

Minimum 24 months neonatal experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Australia or New Zealand at Senior Registrar or Provisional Fellow level

Demonstrated ability to significantly contribute to continuous clinical practice improvement in neonatology.

Demonstrated ability to train junior medical staff, medical students and nursing/ midwifery in neonatal/ perinatal medicine

Demonstrated superior and wide knowledge of evidence based neonatal and perinatal medicine

Demonstrated high level proficiency in all relevant tertiary neonatal procedures including the ability to intubate, insert IA lines and umbilical central lines, and manage neonatal ventilation.

Demonstrated ability to prevent and negotiate conflict in a critical care environment
