Role Description
The Systems & Data Developer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, data solutions, databases, system integrations, and automation tools that support the organisation and its clients.
The role combines software development, data engineering, system integration, and technical problem-solving to deliver reliable, secure, scalable, and efficient technology solutions aligned with business requirements.
This role is a full-time permanent role based in Canberra office.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance business applications and digital solutions to support organisational and client requirements.
- Develop applications, tools, and automation solutions to improve business processes, operational efficiency, data accessibility, and system capability.
- Support the development, enhancement, integration, migration, and potential replacement of business systems in line with organisational requirements.
- Design, develop, optimise, and maintain databases, data structures, views, procedures, and data models to support applications and organisational data requirements.
- Build and maintain scalable ETL processes, APIs, system integrations, and automated data workflows between internal and external systems.
- Develop solutions for collecting, transforming, validating, analysing, and presenting data to support operational and business decision-making.
- Develop appropriate data visualisations and analytical outputs to communicate information clearly and support business understanding.
- Maintain and enhance existing applications, automation tools, scripts, databases, and integrations, including troubleshooting, defect resolution, performance improvement, and technical upgrades.
- Apply appropriate software development practices, including source control, documentation, testing, deployment, change management, and secure development practices.
- Support application environments, system configuration, user access, deployment, and other technical administration activities as required.
- Work with internal teams, technology providers, and relevant external parties to support system integration, infrastructure, connectivity, security, and availability requirements.
- Support database administration activities, including performance monitoring, access management, data integrity, backup requirements, maintenance, and issue resolution.
- Identify technical risks, system limitations, integration issues, and opportunities to improve existing systems, applications, data processes, and automation.
- Maintain appropriate technical documentation for applications, databases, integrations, configurations, APIs, deployment processes, and technical procedures.
- Analyse business and technical requirements and translate them into practical, maintainable, and scalable technical solutions.
- Provide technical input into solution design, project planning, effort estimation, dependencies, implementation approaches, and technical risks.
- Manage multiple development activities and technical priorities while maintaining agreed timelines, quality standards, and appropriate communication of progress, issues, and risks.
- Support testing, implementation, migration, deployment, and transition activities for new systems and system enhancements.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the organisation's systems, automation, data, and technology capabilities.
- Support the Manager with ad-hoc and scheduled technical tasks as required.
Requirements
- Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, or another relevant discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated experience in software development or business application development.
- Strong programming capability, particularly in Python, with the ability to develop reliable and maintainable applications and automation solutions.
- Experience with front-end development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or equivalent modern technologies.
- Experience with back-end development and application development frameworks.
- Experience developing APIs, system integrations, applications, and automated workflows.
- Strong knowledge of SQL, relational databases, database design, optimisation, and data management.
- Experience developing and maintaining ETL processes and integrating data from multiple systems and data sources.
- Experience using source control platforms such as Git and applying appropriate software development and change management practices.
- Experience with cloud platforms and services used for application hosting, databases, storage, identity, or system integration.
- Strong data analysis skills, with the ability to interpret, analyse, and communicate information using appropriate data visualisation techniques.
- Understanding of application security, identity and access management, secure development practices, and data protection principles.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across applications, databases, integrations, and data processes.
- Ability to understand business and technical requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent technical activities and priorities while maintaining delivery quality and effective communication.
- Ability to effectively use modern AI-assisted development tools to improve development productivity, troubleshooting, testing, documentation, and solution delivery.
- Strong analytical, documentation, communication, and organisational skills.
Highly Desirable
- Experience developing enterprise applications, business systems, or workflow solutions.
- Experience with database administration and performance optimisation.
- Experience integrating enterprise systems through APIs, middleware, scheduled processes, or other integration technologies.
- Experience with cloud-based application architecture, authentication, identity management, and role-based access controls.
- Understanding of network infrastructure, cybersecurity principles, system security, vulnerability management, and secure deployment practices.
- Experience working with external software vendors, technology providers, or managed service providers.
- Experience working with complex operational systems, enterprise applications, or enterprise data environments.
- Experience in property, facilities management, government services, or other complex operational environments.
