The Opportunity
MinRes is seeking a site-based Environment — Fauna Specialist to deliver fauna management activities and ensure compliance with Biodiversity Conservation Act approvals including Section 40 authorisations and Regulation 28 licences across our various operations.'
We are looking for a proactive individual with hands-on Threatened fauna handling experience who is committed to environmental excellence and making a tangible impact in the field.
You will play an integral role as a named authorised person under our Section 40 Wildlife Activity authorisations, responsible for the planning and execution of pre-clearance surveys, fauna spotting, trapping, handling, transport and relocation of listed Threatened species — ensuring clearing activities can proceed safely and lawfully.
This position commences as a 12-Month Contract on a regular 8/6 roster FIFO from Perth alongside a dedicated team that fosters a collaborative environment, promoting professional growth.
Key responsibilities:
- Execute all activities authorised under relevant Section 40 Management Operation and Wildlife Activity authorisations and Regulation 28 licences, ensuring strict adherence to conditions including personnel, methodology, reporting and spatial requirements.
- Plan and undertake pre-clearance surveys within operational areas, including habitat assessment, camera and cage trap deployment and retrieval, fauna identification and risk classification.
- Conduct fauna spotting during all clearing activities in listed Threatened species habitat, exercising empowerment to cease and recommence clearing where one or more listed Threatened species may be injured or killed.
- Set, check and manage cage traps and box traps for the capture and relocation of listed threatened species, including Northern quoll and Pilbara olive python. Conduct hand capture where required.
- Handle, transport and release Threatened fauna in accordance with DBCA Standard Operating Procedures, approved methodology and animal ethics requirements.
- Provide direct supervision to non-qualified authorised persons and field assistants undertaking authorised activities, in accordance with S40 conditions.
- Ensure fauna data (camera trap, trapping, sighting, relocation) is accurately recorded, curated and reported to meet internal and regulatory requirements, including annual activity records and 72-hour incident reporting to DBCA.
- Promote environmental awareness and deliver site-specific training on threatened fauna identification, obligations under Section 40 authorisations and stop-work protocols.
- Support environmental auditing, inspection and reporting processes, and coordinate targeted fauna surveys where required.
- Ensure remote travel and field work is adequately planned with appropriate Emergency and Safety Plans in place, and actively participate in site pre-starts and management meetings.
What is required:
- Demonstrable experience handling native fauna in the field, including Northern quoll, is a requirement.
- Previous holding of a Section 40 Authorisation (Wildlife Activity) under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (WA) or demonstrated eligibility to be named on such an authorisation.
- Previous holding of a Regulation 28 Licence or demonstrated eligibility to be named on such a Licence.
- Hands-on experience with trapping (cage traps, box traps), hand capture, transport and relocation of Threatened species.
- Current animal ethics training/certification.
- A bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Zoology, Wildlife Biology or related discipline.
- Knowledge of WA environmental legislation, ethics requirements, guidelines and standards — specifically the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2018 and DBCA Standard Operating Procedures.
- Experience interpreting and operating under BC Act Section 40 authorisations and Regulation 28 licences.
- Understanding of project/operational environmental risks.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with teams at all levels.
- Sound experience with GIS software.
- Current C Class manual driver's licence and Current First Aid certificate.
