## Mechanical Engineering Draftsperson
## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineering Draftsperson to join our team and contribute to a broad range of mechanical engineering projects across design, manufacture, and installation. This role supports Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists in delivering precise technical drawings, documentation, and on-site inspections to ensure projects are completed to specification. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation in drafting and CAD software, a methodical approach to problem-solving, and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative engineering environment.
## Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed technical drawings, plans, and design documentation for mechanical engineering projects, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant Australian standards and project specifications
- Assist Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists in the design and development of mechanical equipment, plant, and systems, contributing technical input throughout the project lifecycle
- Select appropriate tools, materials, and equipment for mechanical assemblies, ensuring suitability for application and cost-effectiveness
- Assemble, install, and commission new or modified mechanical assemblies, components, machine tools and controls, and hydraulic power systems in accordance with engineering drawings and safety requirements
- Estimate material costs, quantities, and machinery requirements to support project planning, tendering, and procurement processes
- Plan, perform, and oversee field and laboratory tests, ensuring results are accurately recorded and communicated to the wider engineering team
- Collect and analyse technical data, carry out complex computations, and prepare clear diagrams and reports to support engineering decisions
- Organise and supervise the inspection and maintenance of mechanical machines, plant, and installations to ensure continued operational integrity
- Review designs and completed works to verify conformance with technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and contractual provisions
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of drawings, revisions, test data, and project documentation using appropriate document management systems
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project managers, site supervisors, and procurement staff to support timely and on-budget project delivery
- Identify and communicate potential design conflicts or engineering risks early in the project cycle, proposing practical and cost-effective solutions
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Diploma or Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Engineering Drafting, or a closely related discipline — or equivalent trade and industry experience
- Demonstrated experience in a mechanical drafting or engineering technician role within a relevant industry such as manufacturing, construction, mining, or resources
- Proficiency in CAD software, with demonstrated capability in 2D and 3D modelling tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar platforms
- Sound understanding of Australian engineering standards, codes of practice, and workplace health and safety requirements
- Ability to interpret and produce detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications to a high standard
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, with experience carrying out material quantity estimates and cost calculations
- Competent in the use of MS Office Suite for reporting, documentation, and communication purposes
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise clearly with engineers, contractors, and project stakeholders
- High level of attention to detail and a systematic approach to managing multiple tasks and competing deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative engineering team in a dynamic project environment
## Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology
- Experience working on large-scale industrial, infrastructure, or resources projects within an Australian context
- Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic system design and documentation
- Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) principles and their application in technical drawings
- Experience using document management and project collaboration tools such as ProjectWise, Procore, or similar platforms
- Professional membership with Engineers Australia or a relevant industry body
- Experience in a supervisory or lead draftsperson capacity, including mentoring junior technical staff
