Specialist Teachers (Disability Education) – Primary and Secondary: permanent and temporary positions

About the ACT Education Directorate:

ACT public schools educate more than 50,000 students across 93 schools including early childhood schools, preschools, primary schools, high schools, colleges and specialist school settings.
Students with disability and diverse learning needs are welcome to attend their local school, where they will be supported with reasonable adjustments. ACT public schools have access to the Education Directorate’s Allied Health Service, School Psychology Service and evidence-based professional learning.
In addition, there are 4 specialist schools providing education settings for students with moderate, severe or profound intellectual disability: Cranleigh (kindergarten to year 6) and Black Mountain School (years 7-12) on Canberra’s northside and Malkara (preschool to year 6) and The Woden School (years 7-12) on the southside.

About the role:
As an inclusive and diversity teacher in an ACT public school, you will:

Contribute to whole school planning and the development of a fully inclusive school culture.

Develop and implement Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) tailored to students’ unique learning needs and goals.

Provide explicit instruction and direct support to students with diverse abilities, ensuring an inclusive learning environment.

Lead Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) and other paraprofessional staff working with students under your care.

Provide professional guidance and support to non-specialist teachers and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) on differentiation and inclusive practices.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including therapists, support staff, and families, to optimise student outcomes.

Monitor and assess student progress, adjusting teaching strategies as necessary, and lead the collection of evidence for NCCD compliance.

Support the school to meet its obligations under the Disability Standards for Education 2005.

Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in disability and inclusion.
What we’re looking for:
- Qualifications and experience: A recognised tertiary teaching qualification, with a specialisation in disability education or equivalent and/or demonstrated experience supporting students with diverse learning needs, intellectual disabilities and learning difficulties.

Commitment: An ability to build positive relationships with students, staff and the community, and a commitment to nurturing student wellbeing.

A recognised 4-year full-time tertiary teaching qualification.

ACT Teacher Quality Institute Teacher Registration (or eligibility to apply).

Valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration (or eligibility to apply).
