Department Description
The Coordinator of Medical Training (CoT) is a senior medical leadership position responsible for the oversight, coordination and continuous improvement of psychiatric training, medical education and trainee wellbeing across Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS). The role supports the delivery of high-quality training experiences that meet Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) accreditation requirements and contribute to the development of a sustainable and highly skilled psychiatric workforce.

About the Role:
At PYHMWS we are recruiting for Coordinator of Medical Training 0.4 FTE: 28 hours per fortnight
The Coordinator of Medical Training (CoT) is responsible for leading, co-ordinating and monitoring psychiatric training, supervision, trainee wellbeing and educational activities across PYMHWS. The role ensures that PYMHWS maintains compliance with all RANZCP training and accreditation requirements and continues to develop as a high-quality training provider for both local and international medical trainees. . The Coordinator of Medical Training is professionally accountable to the Medical Director and works in close partnership with Clinical Directors, Medical Workforce, accredited supervisors, partner health services and the RANZCP Director of Training to ensure high-quality educational experiences, safe training environments and effective workforce development.This includes oversight and support of psychiatry registrars, prevocational trainees, Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs), international trainees and other junior medical staff undertaking training placements within PYMHWS.
The CoT will contribute to recruitment, workforce planning, rostering, onboarding, retention, wellbeing and professional development activities relating to junior medical staff and trainees across PYMHWS. The CoT is responsible for identifying, monitoring and escalating risks relating to trainee supervision, educational quality, trainee wellbeing, accreditation compliance and workforce sustainability.Additionally, the Consultant Psychiatrist will participate in the on call roster arrangement including after-hours, and the Consultant Psychiatrist may be asked to contribute to when asked to assist in patient care throughout the service if the need arises. The Consultant Psychiatrist will be required to undertake the statutory responsibilities of an Authorised Psychiatrist under the Mental Health Wellbeing Act 2022 (Victoria) as delegated by the Medical Director.
What You'll Do:
- Support supervisor accreditation of both fellows and non-fellows. Provide orientation to supervisor responsibilities especially for non-fellow supervisors.
- Assist in the development of new training posts and preparation of RANZCP accreditation documents.
- Conduct Bi-annual training meetings with registrars to establish training goals.
- Monitor trainee needs and progress, through regular meetings with trainees and supervisors.
- Monitor trainee variations including applications for Breaks in Training and Part-time training.
- Develop Targeted Learning Plans (TLP) for trainees who are unsuccessful in examinations and rotations. Support of supervisors and trainees throughout duration of TLP. Routine updates to DoT.
- Liaison with trainees for other well-being matters: with the PYMHWS Clinical directors and Directors of Medical Workforce at partner hospitals, DoT/SIMG DoT, and appropriate supervisors to address problems that trainees may be experiencing.
- Co-ordinate a regular education program with trainee participation, including activities such as journal club, case presentations and grand rounds at each local service.
- Medical Leadership to a passionate, experienced multidisciplinary team of Mental Health nurses, Clinical Psychologists and Allied Health and lived experience workforce
- Deliver Youth focused care to young people aged 12-25 and their families who live in the Wyndham catchment area
- Supervise Psychiatry Registrars
- Participate in the PYHMWS on call roster 5-6 weeks per calendar year
- Participate in the PYMWS Medical Education and Training Program
About You:
Formal Qualifications:
- Registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
Essential:
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience in all aspects of psychiatry, and with substantial experience and expertise in clinical practice with young people (aged 12-25 years) experiencing mental disorders.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership and management skills and experience.
- Ability to demonstrate skills in multidisciplinary work and the development of effective working relationships with consumers and carers.
- Ability to demonstrate aptitude for and expertise in service development.
- Knowledge of the Victorian Mental Health Wellbeing Act 2022.
- Capacity to develop effective working relationships, collaborations and partnerships with a range of services within the broader community service system including alcohol and other drug agencies, employment and housing services, Mental Health Community Support Services and related services.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) as well as abilities in problem solving and negotiation.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and function autonomously.
Desirable:
- Willingness to work from a community-based site, and across multiple sites if required
- Have experience in teaching and involvement in research.
- A current Victorian driver’s licence.
- Knowledge of relevant guidelines, plans and strategies related to the mental health service system (E.g. Victorian Mental Health Reform Strategy, National Standards for Mental Health Services, etc).
