About the role
We are seeking a Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join our Sydney Construction & Infrastructure team on a full time permanent basis.
This opportunity will suit an experienced construction lawyer looking to work on sophisticated contentious matters while contributing to client relationships, mentoring junior lawyers and supporting business development initiatives.

You will work closely with Sandra Steele in K&L Gates’ Sydney Construction & Infrastructure practice.
Sandra Steele is a highly regarded construction partner with more than 20 years of experience advising on contentious and non-contentious matters across major projects. Recognised by Chambers Asia-Pacific and The Legal 500 Asia Pacific, she is known for her technical expertise, commercial judgement and in-house experience gained at Lendlease.
The practice acts across the full project lifecycle, including:
- Dispute avoidance and project advisory work
- Arbitration, litigation and Adjudications
- Major infrastructure, transport, energy and development projects
- Cross-border and multi-jurisdictional matters
The team advises on major transport infrastructure disputes, renewable energy projects and significant contractor litigation, offering genuine breadth across the sector.
What does the role involve?
- Advising clients on construction disputes, dispute avoidance and project delivery issues, including adjudications
- Running litigation and arbitration matters primarily in the supreme court, across various jurisdictions internationally and in Australia
- Building strong client relationships and contributing to business development initiatives
- Mentoring and supervising junior lawyers to support the delivery of high-quality legal services
- Contributing to the firm’s learning and development initiatives in your area of expertise
- Helping develop and share know-how, precedents and other knowledge resources across the team
The ideal candidate will bring
- At least 6 years’ post-qualification experience in construction law
- Experience across contentious and/or front-end construction matters
- Strong drafting, negotiation and analytical skills
- Commercial judgement and the ability to build strong client relationships
- A collaborative, proactive and team-oriented approach
