Victoria Police's LSD provides legal services and advice to support policing, courts, and the Victorian community. Legal Services is led by an Executive Director (who is also the organisation's General Counsel) and employs over 800 staff spread across four divisions - the Office of the Executive Director; the Specialist Legal and Litigation Division; the Courts & Prosecution Services Division; and the Legal Business Operations Division.
The Supervising Lawyer is a critical role in the ELU within the SLLD of Victoria Police. This role involves the provision of complex legal advice to senior clients, as well as managing complex litigation and regulatory investigations. This role also supervises a team of four employees which includes a Senior Lawyer, Lawyer, WorkCover Litigation Case Manager and soon a WorkCover Litigation Administrator.

Your duties will include:
- Providing complex legal advice to senior clients within Victoria Police
- Managing complex litigation and regulatory investigations, including appearing and/or instructing in various commissions, courts and tribunals
- Leading a small team, including settling legal advice, providing guidance and support on matters, as well as developing and mentoring team members
- Involvement in various Victoria Police projects, change initiatives or working groups as required
- Reporting on matters/ activities being undertaken by the Unit, including providing briefings to senior or external stakeholders
- Contributing to business and departmental/ divisional/ unit planning and priorities
- Other duties as required.
As the successful applicant, you will have:
- Significant employment law experience, particularly dealing with complex employment issues and litigation
- Experience appearing in commissions, courts and tribunals
- Knowledge or experience with the public sector, litigation, equal opportunity, administrative law, OHS and Workers' Compensation particularly desirable
- Experience in providing advice to and influencing senior clients/ stakeholders
- Experience building strong working relationships with internal and external clients/ stakeholders, particularly at a senior level
- Strategic thinking and the ability to solve complex problems
- Experience in supervising and leading a team
- Ability to work with limited direction, be proactive and deal with uncertainty
- Significant organisational and time management skills
- Resilience and the ability to deal with high caseloads, strict deadlines and multiple competing priorities.
Requirements and relevant information:
- One (1) x full-time, ongoing position available.
- The salary range for a VPS 5 role is $116,413 to $140,849 (covering salary ranges VPSG 5.1 and VPSG 5.2). Although it is standard practice for selected candidates to commence at the base of the salary range, genuine consideration will be given to a commencement salary within the available range that is commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills and experiences. This will be subject to negotiations with the Hiring Manager in the course of the selection process and may include the provision of evidence of a higher income and/or supporting documentation (as required).
