About the role
The DevOps Engineer is responsible for the design, automation, security and day-to-day operation of the cloud infrastructure and delivery pipelines that underpin the irwinSolutions data extraction and integration platform.
This is a hands-on engineering role with a genuine solution design component. In addition to building and running infrastructure, the DevOps Engineer contributes to architectural decisions — service boundaries, integration patterns, data flows, build-versus-buy assessments and technology selection — and documents those decisions so they can be understood, maintained and scaled by others. The role bridges infrastructure engineering and solutions architecture, translating business and client requirements into secure, cost-effective, maintainable technical designs, then implementing and operating them.
The successful candidate will be a key technical point of reference for cloud, automation and platform reliability within the business, working closely with the Director, developmental staff and distributed delivery teams.
Key responsibilities
- Cloud infrastructure design and operation — design, build, secure and operate scalable, resilient and cost-optimised cloud infrastructure (compute, storage, networking, identity and edge services) supporting the irwinSolutions data extraction and integration platform.
- Solution architecture and technical design — contribute to the target architecture of the platform, including service boundaries, data ownership, integration patterns and migration pathways, and produce architecture decision records, reference architectures and technical roadmaps that align engineering work with business objectives.
- Infrastructure as code — implement and maintain infrastructure-as-code and configuration management (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible or equivalent) so that all environments are repeatable, version-controlled, auditable and free of manual configuration drift.
- CI/CD and release automation — design, build and continuously improve continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines for both application and infrastructure changes, increasing deployment frequency while reducing manual release risk.
- Containerisation and microservices — design, deploy and administer containerised workloads and microservices-based architectures in production environments using Docker and a container orchestration platform (Kubernetes, ECS or equivalent).
- Data extraction and integration pipelines — design, deploy and support the automated pipelines that extract, transform and deliver data from client Systems to downstream platforms and APIs, ensuring throughput, data integrity, reconciliation and reliable scheduled execution.
- Security, governance and compliance — embed security-by-design across the delivery lifecycle, including identity and access management, role-based access control, network segmentation, encryption in transit and at rest, secrets and key management, vulnerability remediation and penetration-test findings, aligned to ISO 27001 principles and Australian Privacy Principles obligations for client and consumer data.
- Observability and monitoring — establish and maintain logging, metrics, tracing, alerting and dashboarding across the estate to improve mean-time-to-detection and mean-time-to-resolution, and to provide evidence of platform performance to clients.
- Reliability, capacity and disaster recovery — own performance, capacity, availability, backup and disaster-recovery planning and testing; lead incident management and root cause analysis, and implement preventative measures arising from post-incident review.
- Technical leadership and mentoring — provide architectural guidance, code and design review, and mentoring to developers and distributed delivery team members, setting engineering standards and lifting the overall quality of design, automation and documentation across the team. Lead migration projects to latest cloud technologies.
About you - Required Skills and Experience
- 3 to 5 years' relevant post-qualification experience in a DevOps, cloud engineering, platform engineering or infrastructure automation role, including exposure to solution design and architecture decision-making.
- A Bachelor degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a closely related discipline; or an equivalent combination of qualification and demonstrated relevant experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with a major public cloud platform (AWS preferred; Azure or GCP considered), including core compute, storage, networking, identity, database and monitoring services.
- Demonstrated experience developing and deploying infrastructure-as-code and configuration management solutions using Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible or equivalent tooling.
- Proven experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitLab CI or equivalent) supporting secure and reliable delivery of both applications and infrastructure.
- Hands-on experience administering container technologies (Docker) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Amazon ECS or equivalent) in production environments.
- Proficiency in at least one scripting or automation language — Python, Bash, PowerShell or similar — with the ability to write maintainable, tested automation code.
- Solid working knowledge of relational databases (Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL or MySQL), including schema design, query performance tuning, backup and data migration.
- Practical experience with API and integration design, including REST APIs, webhooks, message queues and scheduled ETL or data pipeline processes.
- Sound understanding of cloud and application security practices, including IAM and RBAC, network security, encryption, secrets management, logging and audit.
- Strong grounding in DevOps practice, incident management, on-call support and structured root cause analysis
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in simple terms and tailor the depth of explanation to technical, executive and client audiences.
- Excellent attention to detail, sound judgement in complex and distributed environments, and the ability to manage competing priorities across multiple concurrent projects.

- Experience with data warehousing, reporting or analytics platforms, and with data quality and reconciliation practices.
- Exposure to AI-assisted development tooling (e.g. GitHub Copilot) and to governing its safe and compliant application.
- Familiarity with ITIL or comparable service management frameworks.
