Ecological Data Analyst

ROLE CONTEXT
The Ecological Data Analyst is a critical technical role responsible for building Regenerate Australia's data management systems, conducting ecological and carbon sequestration analysis, and providing verification support for restoration projects and carbon credit schemes. This position plays a central role in translating field data into actionable insights that drive project delivery, stakeholder reporting, and organisational decision-making.
POSITION PURPOSE
The Ecological Data Analyst develops and maintains custom data management systems for Regenerate Australia, analyses ecological community datasets to verify habitat restoration and carbon sequestration claims, and generates insights that support project delivery, marketing, and stakeholder communications. This role combines strong statistical and coding expertise with the ability to communicate complex analyses to diverse audiences.
This person will work closely with the Regional Restoration team, and the fundraising/marketing team to ensure data collection protocols support both scientific rigor and practical application. The role requires collaboration across teams to integrate analytical insights into customer-facing dashboards, grant reporting, and carbon credit verification processes.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Data Management System Development and Maintenance
Responsibilities:
- Design and build custom data management systems to collate field data and ecological monitoring information
- Develop automated data validation and quality control processes to ensure dataset integrity
- Create and maintain databases for carbon sequestration, biodiversity metrics, and restoration project outcomes
- Implement data collection protocols in coordination with field teams and community volunteers
- Integrate spatial data (GIS) with ecological datasets for comprehensive project analysis
- Maintain data security, backup protocols, and long-term data accessibility
2. Ecological and Carbon Sequestration Analysis
Responsibilities:
- Conduct statistical analysis and exploration of ecological community datasets across all environments and taxonomic groups
- Analyse carbon sequestration data to support project planning and carbon credit applications
- Apply statistical methods to assess biodiversity outcomes, survival rates, and ecosystem health indicators
- Develop and refine analytical models for predicting restoration success and carbon accumulation
- Generate insights from large ecological datasets to inform adaptive management strategies
- Provide data analysis support for large-scale restoration projects in coordination with Program Lead
3. Verification, Assurance, and Compliance Reporting
Responsibilities:
- Provide validation and verification data for carbon credit schemes and environmental reporting frameworks
- Support preparation of documentation for carbon credit registration and verification audits
- Verify habitat restoration claims using statistical methods and ecological indicators
- Coordinate with external auditors and verification bodies to provide required datasets
- Maintain comprehensive audit trails for all verification-related data and analyses
- Support development of methodologies for biodiversity credit verification aligned with Nature Repair Market
4. Stakeholder Communication and Data Visualization
Responsibilities:
- Translate complex analytical findings into accessible insights for non-technical stakeholders
- Create data visualizations and dashboards for customer-facing platforms and marketing materials
- Develop compelling case studies highlighting project outcomes using data storytelling techniques
- Collaborate with fundraising and marketing teams to integrate metrics into grant applications and promotional content
- Present analytical findings to funders, partners, and board members as required
- Provide data-driven recommendations to leadership team based on analytical insights
5. Cross-Team Collaboration and Technical Support
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with Program Lead and field teams to ensure data collection protocols meet analytical requirements
- Provide technical guidance to community volunteers and field staff on data collection methods
- Work with Head of Data and Systems to align analytical approaches with organizational objectives
- Support integration of ecological data with financial and operational systems
- Participate in project planning meetings to ensure data considerations are incorporated from inception
- Share knowledge and build data literacy across the organization through training and documentation
SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
Technical Skills:
- Advanced proficiency in statistical programming languages (R, Python) for ecological data analysis
- Strong statistical methods background including multivariate analysis, regression modeling, and hypothesis testing
- Database design and management (SQL, cloud-based systems)
- GIS software proficiency (QGIS, ArcGIS) for spatial ecological analysis
- Data visualization tools and dashboard development (Tableau, Power BI, or similar)
- Understanding of carbon accounting methodologies and environmental reporting frameworks
- Experience working with ecological community datasets across multiple environments and taxonomic groups

WORKING CONDITIONS
Location and Flexibility:
- Based at Perth Head Office
- 1.0 FTE working week
- Occasional field site visits for data collection validation and team coordination

- 10 days (pro-rata) annual leave (excluding public holidays)
Pay: $79,000.00 – $90,007.00 per year
