About the Role:
As
Senior Systems Engineer, you will drive substantial project and continuous improvement work — modernising Curtin’s endpoint management platforms, supporting the cyber security uplift programme, evolving the application delivery model, and shaping the future direction of Windows endpoint engineering.
This is a high-impact leadership role where you will shape strategy, guide enterprise-wide technical decisions, and ensure desktop and endpoint services are secure, resilient, scalable, and ready to support teaching, learning, research, and corporate priorities. Working at the intersection of strategy and delivery, you will turn vision into trusted, well-governed outcomes that strengthen capability and reduce cyber risk across the University.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Act as Desktop Services Technical Lead — set technical direction across our endpoint management platforms and influence platform architecture decisions.
- Lead project and continuous improvement work across Desktop Services — taking platform initiatives, security uplifts, and infrastructure modernisation from concept through delivery.
- Design and implement new platform capability — from concept through pilot to production rollout.
- Own advanced scripting and automation across the fleet, including PowerShell and Microsoft Graph API.
- Represent Desktop Services in cross-functional technical forums with Cyber Security, Infrastructure, Applications, and Identity teams.
- Translate the Desktop Services multi-year strategy into delivered capability.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, design records, and operational runbooks.
- Manage technical relationships with key technology vendors and partners.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend adoption or decommissioning.
- Provide senior technical leadership across desktop and endpoint platforms, defining standards and procedures while strengthening cyber security posture and technical risk management.
- Ensure the availability, performance, and reliability of desktop services through effective capacity and lifecycle planning, and by providing leadership during major incidents.
- Provide senior technical oversight and coordination for complex initiatives and refresh programs, ensuring controlled, well-governed delivery.
- Mentor engineers and specialists, provide expert guidance, and strengthen collaboration across ICT teams, stakeholders, and vendors.
Who we are looking for (selection criteria):
- Completion of a relevant degree with extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training, including a strong record of managing enterprise desktop and endpoint environments in a large or complex organisation.
- Advanced modern endpoint engineering expertise with hands-on experience across modern Microsoft endpoint platforms (Intune, Configuration Manager/SCCM, Entra ID and Microsoft 365; cloud and on-premises, including co-management and modern deployment), device compliance and identity-driven conditional access, Defender for Endpoint and security baselines, Windows 10/11 platform engineering, application packaging (MSI/MSIX/Win32), and endpoint security fundamentals (disk encryption, certificate-based authentication, 802.1x), underpinned by advanced PowerShell and Microsoft Graph automation.
- Proven track record of leading technical delivery across a large managed fleet and taking platform improvements end-to-end (scoping, designing, building, piloting, rolling out, and handing into operations), with genuine solution design and architecture experience, not just operational support.
- Experience supporting production desktop services within IT service management frameworks, collaborating across ICT teams to deliver reliable, secure, high-performing and user-focused services; able to set technical direction without direct line authority and to mentor engineers and lift the team's overall technical capability.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to resolve complex technical issues and translate technical detail for technical and non-technical stakeholders, with a balance of strategic thinking and operational delivery and solid quality and documentation discipline.
Desirable
- Experience aligning desktop and endpoint services to recognised cyber security frameworks (for example ACSC Essential Eight, NIST), including vulnerability remediation, automated patching, and application control.
- Exposure to Apple ecosystem capability (Jamf Pro, macOS and iOS via Apple Business Manager and automated device enrolment), and exposure to virtual desktop platforms, Linux environments, or supporting infrastructure technologies.
Role Requirements:
- As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered
- Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction
