Project Engineer — Job Description

Role summary

Plans, coordinates, and delivers engineering projects on time, on budget, and to specification by bridging technical teams, project management, and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

Develop and manage project plans, schedules, budgets, and resource allocation for engineering projects.
Translate project requirements into technical specifications, drawings, and scope of work; coordinate with design, procurement, and construction teams.
Oversee project execution: supervise contractors/subcontractors, monitor progress, and ensure adherence to quality standards and safety protocols.
Perform engineering calculations, technical reviews, and design verification to ensure compliance with codes and specifications.
Manage procurement activities: prepare RFQs/RFPs, evaluate vendor bids, and track long‑lead items and equipment deliveries.
Conduct site inspections, commissioning support, testing, and handover activities; resolve technical issues and field changes.
Prepare and maintain project documentation: change orders, meeting minutes, progress reports, as‑built drawings, and final project closeout packs.
Monitor risks and implement mitigation plans; escalate issues and coordinate corrective actions with stakeholders.
Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams to align expectations and report project status.
Track project KPIs (schedule variance, cost variance, quality metrics) and drive continuous improvement.
Mentor junior engineers and coordinate subcontractor performance and safety.

Qualifications

Education: BS in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or relevant discipline); MSc or PMP desirable for senior roles.
Experience: 3–7+ years in engineering project delivery; senior/project lead roles typically 7+ years.
Technical skills: Strong engineering fundamentals in the relevant discipline, ability to read/interprete drawings, and proficiency with CAD/engineering software.
Project tools: Experience with project management tools (MS Project, Primavera, Smartsheet) and ERP/CMMS systems.
Commercial skills: Budgeting, cost control, change management, and contract administration experience.
Health & safety: Knowledge of HSE standards, permit-to-work systems, and site safety practices.
Soft skills: Organization, communication, stakeholder management, problem-solving, and leadership.
Certifications: PMP, PRINCE2, or relevant discipline-specific licenses a plus.

Working conditions

Office-based planning with frequent site visits; may require travel and on-site supervision during critical phases.
Project-driven workloads with deadline peaks and occasional extended hours during commissioning or shutdowns.

Performance metrics

On-time project delivery (schedule variance).
Budget adherence (cost variance, cost per deliverable).
Quality and defect rates at handover.
Safety record (incidents during project).
Stakeholder/client satisfaction and number of successful project handovers.

Pay: $59.43 – $85.23 per hour
