Wesfarmers OneDigital is building Australia's leading data and digital retail ecosystem, underpinned by AI across everything we do. We operate across four pillars - loyalty, data, retail media and AI, turning millions of customer interactions into insights that shape how Australians shop, live and connect.
We have an exciting, new opportunity for a Senior AI Engineer to join our team!
The Senior AI Engineer is the technical cornerstone of the AI Accelerator delivery function, owning solution architecture, code quality, and the delivery of the team’s hardest technical work. This is a hands-on role, not a governance or oversight position. You will design solutions, write production code, review others’ work, and solve the toughest problems the team encounters.
You will set the standards for how the Accelerator builds, establishing architectural patterns, coding standards, and quality practices that ensure consistency and maintainability. You will champion modern software engineering methodologies, including LLMOps and AI operationalisation, enacting them within the Accelerator and promoting adoption across the Group.
You will also lead contract engineers when engaged, mentor other team members, and package technical learnings for export through playbooks, reusable components, and partnership with the AI Enablement and Governance team.
What you’ll be doing
Solution architecture and delivery
- Lead solution architecture for AI initiatives built by the Accelerator, ensuring designs are scalable, secure, and aligned with enterprise standards
- Deliver complex technical work directly, writing production-quality code and modelling the AI-first execution mindset the team embodies
- Solve the hardest technical problems the team encounters across LLMs, agent frameworks, and cloud AI service
- Evaluate and recommend technical approaches, frameworks, and tools, maintaining currency with the rapidly evolving AI landscape
Engineering standards and quality
- Establish and maintain coding standards, architectural patterns, and quality practices across the team’s technical output
- Champion modern software engineering methodologies, including LLMOps and AI operationalisation, both within the Accelerator and across the Group
- Conduct code reviews and provide technical mentorship to other team members and embedded divisional engineers
- Partner with the Enablement and Tooling Specialist on the technical dimensions of adoption tooling and developer experience
Leadership and coordination
- Lead and coordinate contract engineers when engaged, ensuring quality, alignment, and effective integration with Accelerator delivery
- Represent the Accelerator’s technical perspective in architecture forums, governance bodies, and stakeholder engagements
- Participate in technical due diligence for vendor and partner solutions as required
Knowledge export and governance
- Contribute to the Accelerator’s knowledge export function by documenting technical patterns, creating reusable components, and sharing learnings with divisional technology teams
- Collaborate with the AI Enablement and Governance team, Data and Analytics, and other OneDigital functions to ensure solutions meet governance, security, and compliance requirements
- Open-source reusable components where appropriate and contribute to Group-wide playbooks
What you'll bring to the table
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, with significant recent focus on AI and ML implementation.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building production AI systems operating at scale, not just proofs of concept.
- Track record of technical leadership, including setting standards, mentoring engineers, and owning architectural decisions.
- Deep proficiency in Python and modern AI and ML frameworks; familiarity with additional languages advantageous.
- Strong understanding of LLM architectures, prompt engineering, RAG patterns, agent design, and fine-tuning approaches.
- Expertise in LLMOps and AI operationalisation, covering model monitoring, evaluation frameworks, deployment pipelines, cost management, and production observability.
- Experience with cloud AI platforms (Azure OpenAI, Vertex AI, AWS) and associated services.
- Solid foundation in software engineering fundamentals: version control, CI/CD, testing, observability, and security practices.
- Experience leading and coordinating contract or contingent technical resources within enterprise environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
- AI-first mindset, using AI tooling extensively in day-to-day work and leading by example on what AI-augmented engineering looks like.
- Microsoft or Google certification highly regarded
