Lead 5G core and mission-critical communications delivery for a major rail project, shaping the future of connected transport infrastructure.
WHY BAI COMMUNICATIONS
It’s an exciting time to be part of BAI Communications. Building on our achievements in broadcasting, telecommunications and critical communications, we continue to expand our operations, helping connect people and support communities.
We operate one of the world’s most extensive broadcast networks, delivering fully managed television and radio services to 99% of the Australian population. During crises such as natural disasters, national broadcasters depend on BAI to maintain vital communications, while emergency services trust us to keep them connected and informed.
As 5G technology transforms connectivity, BAI is leveraging global experience to enable comprehensive coverage in challenging environments—buildings, tunnels, stadiums, and high-density areas. This expertise positions us at the forefront of intelligent, connected infrastructure development across Australia.
Our acquisition of Titan ICT has strengthened our mission-critical capabilities, adding deep expertise in mining, resources, and energy industries. This expansion enables us to deploy robust solutions across Australia’s most demanding operational environments.

LET’S EXPLORE THE ROLE
This is a unique opportunity to lead the architecture, design and delivery of a 5G standalone core and mission-critical communications platform for a major rail infrastructure project.
Reporting to the Head of Design, you will own the technical integrity of the 5G core and MCX application environment, ensuring seamless integration across complex rail systems and meeting strict performance, safety and reliability standards.
You’ll work at the intersection of telecoms innovation and critical infrastructure—partnering with vendors, engineering teams and stakeholders to deliver a high‑availability, future‑ready solution that enables safe and efficient rail operations. This is a 24-month FTC role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and define 5G standalone core architecture supporting mission‑critical rail communications, including slicing, QoS and resilience strategies
- Translate operational rail requirements into clear technical specifications for mission‑critical voice, group communications and emergency services
- Oversee configuration of dedicated network bearers supporting train control and other safety‑critical systems
- Evaluate vendor solutions, providing technical assurance and recommendations across procurement and delivery phases
- Manage vendor relationships, ensuring compliance with specifications, standards and design expectations
- Lead integration across MCX platforms and rail subsystems including rolling stock, control centres and communications networks
- Develop and maintain detailed design documentation, test procedures and system artefacts across project stages
- Support testing, integration and acceptance activities, validating performance in live rail environments
- Provide guidance on technology evolution and future‑proofing critical communications capabilities
LET’S HEAR ABOUT YOU
You bring deep expertise in mobile core networks and critical communications, with the ability to lead complex system design in high‑stakes environments. You’re confident navigating ambiguity, influencing vendors and stakeholders, and delivering robust, future‑ready solutions.
Your experience includes:
- Strong background in 5G standalone core architecture within private or enterprise networks
- Proven capability designing or integrating mission‑critical communication platforms (MCPTT, MCData, MCVideo), including voice and emergency services
- Solid understanding of IMS/SIP signalling and core network service-based architecture
- Expertise in network slicing, QoS frameworks and priority bearer design for multi‑service environments
- Experience designing dedicated network architectures (including DNNs and traffic isolation strategies)
- Familiarity with integration across telecoms and operational systems, including rail, transit or similar critical environments
- Track record managing vendors across design, integration and delivery phases of complex programmes
- Ability to produce high‑quality engineering documentation and translate operational needs into technical solutions
You’ll also have:
- A degree in Telecommunications, Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
- Extensive industry experience in telecoms or mobile network engineering, with exposure to core network design
- A collaborative mindset with strong communication skills and a passion for delivering impactful infrastructure solutions
