About the Role
We are seeking a specialised, high-level Metal Fabricator and Welder for a short-term engagement to support our workshop and site-based operations. The successful candidate will be a hands-on trade professional with proven experience in the repair, maintenance, and fabrication of heavy equipment, mining machinery, and structural components. This role is critical for assisting our team with current project demands and requires a highly motivated individual who can work independently and as part of a team.
The successful candidate will be embedded within our operations team, performing a variety of complex mechanical repairs and welding tasks across live fabrication projects. Work will include maintenance and modification of mining heavy equipment, metal welding and assembly, as well as pipeline fitting and structural fabrication. At the conclusion of the engagement, the candidate will have successfully contributed to the completion of key project outcomes and upskilled team members.
Note: This is a fixed-term specialist training engagement only. The position is not intended to be extended beyond 3 months. The successful applicant is expected to deliver the agreed training outcomes and conclude the engagement at the end of the contract period.
Training Program — What the Candidate Will Deliver
Throughout the 3-month engagement, the successful candidate will plan, deliver, and oversee structured on-the-job training and mentoring to our local welding workforce across the following areas:
· Coaching local staff in the interpretation and application of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) in accordance with project documentation requirements
· Delivering hands-on practical training in metal welding techniques including SMAW, GMAW/FCAW, and GTAW welding processes
· Mentoring local staff in workplace health and safety (WHS) systems — including SWMS preparation, toolbox talks, hazard identification, and site induction procedures
· Guiding local staff through site-specific safety systems and emergency response procedures relevant to WA mining and industrial project environments
· Demonstrating proper preparation for welds including grinding, cutting, and shaping of metal components
· Training local workers in the assembly of weldment parts and fabrication of pipelines as per site requirements
· Establishing and demonstrating quality assurance and weld documentation practices in accordance with project management and compliance standards
· Fostering effective communication and professional collaboration within a multi-trade Australian worksite environment
Key Duties and Responsibilities
· Perform a variety of skilled mechanical repairs, diagnostics, inspection, and modification to automotive, heavy equipment, and other machinery
· Execute maintenance and modification tasks on mining heavy equipment, including Dump Trucks and Backhoes
· Conduct high-quality metal welding, treatment, and assembly of weldment parts into complete units
· Prepare materials for welds by grinding, cutting, and shaping metal components
· Fabricate and fit pipelines and other components as per site requirements and engineering drawings
· Read and interpret layout plans, blueprints, diagrams, and work orders to prepare for welding and cutting activities
· Set up and operate various welding equipment, including gas and arc welding tools (SMAW, GMAW/FCAW, and GTAW)
· Cut and weld metal sheets with various thicknesses utilizing different welding equipment
· Conduct visual and dimensional inspection of completed welds
· Comply with all site safety procedures, SWMS, and WHS requirements always.
· Work collaboratively within a multi-trade team environment to meet project deadlines
· Maintain accurate production documentation and work records
Qualifications and Experience Required
· Minimum Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade) or equivalent — TESDA NCII (SMAW/GMAW/FCAW) or internationally recognised welding qualification considered
· Minimum 3-5 years of demonstrated experience as a Welder/Fabricator
· Proven experience in the repair, modification, and maintenance of heavy equipment and mining machinery (e.g., Dump Trucks, Backhoes)
· Demonstrated experience in pipeline fitting and fabrication
· Experience in welding carbon steel pipes and structural components
· Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, diagrams, and work orders
· Current Construction Induction (White Card) or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
