About the role
Based within the Regulatory, Policy and Standards Division, a great opportunity is now available for an experienced Mechanical person or Engineer who is looking to take on a different type of role and join the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Vehicle Safety and Performance Team.
Reporting to the Senior Safety Standards Advisor, you will use your knowledge and understanding of the design, construction, and maintenance of heavy vehicles to administer incoming applications for vehicle standards, in-principal support, vehicle standards exemptions, complex heavy vehicle modification approvals and to provide technical advice for standard and non-standard heavy vehicles. You will also be responsible for providing technical input into the development and improvement of policies, standards and product enhancements.
This is a frontline position which has regular contact with various internal and external stakeholders. The ability to take complex technical engineering information and convey it in a way that can be understood is important for success in this role.

This is a full time, permanent position, based in Newstead’s vibrant Gasworks precinct – close to transport, cafes and end of trip facilities.
About You
As the ideal candidate, you will have sound mechanical knowledge of heavy vehicle standards and / or hold a Mechanical Engineering degree accompanied by at least 3 years’ experience in the vehicle industry. Prior experience working in the heavy vehicle industry, government legislative environment or jurisdiction operating vehicles standards will be highly regarded.
You are customer focussed, have demonstrated working knowledge of heavy vehicle standards and relevant legislation, and are able to confidently use your research and problem-solving skills to resolve complex technical matters.
You are a positive, collaborative team player, whose high level interpersonal and communication skills enable you to give complex technical advice whilst delivering a high standard of customer service for internal and external stakeholders.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) commenced operations in 2013 as the national entity responsible for regulating all vehicles in Australia over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. The NHVR minimises the compliance burden on the heavy vehicle transport industry, reduces duplication and inconsistences across state and territory borders, and ultimately for the heavy vehicle business with government in Australia.
