Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) — Job Description

Overview

Site Reliability Engineers ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of production systems by applying software engineering principles to operations. They build automation, manage incident response, and improve system observability to enable safe, rapid feature delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain highly available, fault-tolerant infrastructure and services.
Automate operational tasks: deployment pipelines, configuration management, scaling, and recovery.
Develop and maintain monitoring, alerting, and observability (metrics, logs, traces) for services.
Lead incident response: detect, troubleshoot, mitigate, and perform postmortems with actionable remediation.
Implement capacity planning, performance tuning, and cost optimization.
Collaborate with development teams to improve reliability through code changes, testing, and SLO/SLI/SLA definitions.
Manage CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tooling.
Maintain runbooks, playbooks, and operational documentation.
Conduct chaos engineering and resilience testing to validate failure modes.
Mentor engineers on production best practices and participate in on-call rotations.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
Experience: 3+ years in production systems engineering, DevOps, or SRE roles (adjustable by level).
Programming/Scripting: Proficient in one or more languages (Python, Go, Java, Ruby, Bash).
Systems: Deep knowledge of Linux, networking, distributed systems, and security principles.
Cloud & Infrastructure: Hands-on experience with cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker).
Tooling: Experience with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK/EFK, Jaeger), CI/CD (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI), and IaC (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible).
Concepts: Familiar with SRE practices—SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, blameless postmortems, capacity planning.
Soft skills: Strong debugging, communication, and incident-management skills; ability to work in cross-functional teams.
Certifications (optional): Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, or Kubernetes certifications a plus.

Working Conditions

Hybrid or remote-friendly; may require on-call duty and off-hours incident response.

Pay: $55.21 – $75.23 per hour
