Your impact
Jacobs is seeking a Senior Associate Secondary Engineer to join our Melbourne High Voltage Substations team; this is an exciting opportunity for Australian based professionals who are interested in relocating to Melbourne.
This opportunity will provide specialist secondary and protection engineering consulting services while leading and developing our Secondary and Protection capability across the APAC region.
As Team Lead, you will work closely with the APAC Section Lead – Substations to provide technical leadership, people leadership and pastoral care to the Secondary and Protection team. You’ll oversee the delivery of complex high-voltage substation projects ranging from 132 kV up to 500 kV, supporting the design, coordination, and successful delivery of safe, reliable, and sustainable power infrastructure.
In this role, you’ll combine deep technical expertise with strong leadership, influencing project outcomes, developing people, and collaborating with project, commercial, and technical leaders locally and globally. While advanced protection engineering experience is highly valued, we also welcome candidates with a strong secondary engineering background who are keen to continue expanding their protection capability.
Key Areas of Focus:
Provide daily people leadership for the Secondary and Protection team, including coaching, career development, resource planning, workload management and supporting team wellbeing.
Lead concept, tender, and detailed engineering for secondary, protection, and control systems across transmission and distribution projects.
Collaborate within multidisciplinary and geographically distributed teams to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget.
Provide technical input alongside high-level review and assurance of engineering outputs including:
o Protection, metering, and control schemes
o Electrical single line diagrams
o Relay coordination studies and short circuit analyses
o Protection settings, logic configurations, and interlocking/inter tripping schemes
o IEC 61850 substation communication systems
Act as a trusted technical advisor on complex projects, working closely with Design Managers and Project Managers.
Contribute to client engagement and relationship development.
Provide oversight and support across bid preparation, service estimates, and method statements.
Here's what you'll need
Demonstrated people management experience, or the ability to clearly show leadership capability within a geographically diverse, matrix environment.
Extensive experience delivering secondary systems engineering for high-voltage transmission and distribution substations.
Advanced capability in IEC 61850 system architecture and implementation.
Highly developed problem-solving skills with the ability to lead and manage complex technical design challenges.
Clear, confident, and professional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Excellent working knowledge of industry standards and regulatory frameworks (e.g. National Electricity Rules, AEMO Guidelines). #LI-SK2.
