Who We Are:

Welcome to Redland District Special School which is located in Thornlands and close to beautiful Moreton Bay. Thornlands is about 40 minutes from the heart of Brisbane and surrounded by koala bushland and the sea.

Redland District Special School provides educational programs for students with disabilities from birth through to the completion of the allocation of 26 Semesters (including Prep) of State Schooling typically 17 years of age.

Programs for students of non-compulsory school age are delivered through the Redland District Early Childhood Development Program (ECDP).

The school also provides a full time Prep program for students with high support needs who are more than likely to attend the Special School for their future schooling.

About the Role:

The Head of Department - Curriculum (HOD-C) will support student achievement through the implementation of high-quality teaching, learning and pedagogical practices across our school.

Working collaboratively with staff, the HOD-C will lead curriculum implementation and build teacher capability to ensure meaningful, engaging and inclusive learning opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities and complex learning needs.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide curriculum leadership to ensure alignment with departmental priorities, the Australian Curriculum and the diverse learning needs of our students.
Support teachers to design and deliver evidence-informed, differentiated learning programs that maximise student engagement, participation and achievement.
Lead whole-school improvement initiatives in literacy, reading, communication and student wellbeing.
Build strong partnerships with staff, families and external agencies to support positive outcomes for students.
Contribute to strategic planning, school improvement priorities and the effective management of curriculum resources.
Use coaching, mentoring and collaboration to strengthen teaching practice and build staff capability.

Skills and Experience:

Current Queensland teacher registration and eligibility for leadership roles.
Demonstrated experience in curriculum leadership and supporting improved student outcomes.
Strong understanding of inclusive education, differentiation and adjustments for diverse learners.
Excellent interpersonal, communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to lead improvement initiatives and foster a collaborative team culture.
Commitment to working in partnership with families and multidisciplinary teams.

Additional Skills and Experience:

Experience supporting students with intellectual disabilities and complex learning needs.
Knowledge of assistive technology, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and communication supports.
Knowledge of the Science of Reading including emergent literacy instruction.
Understanding of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), trauma-informed practice and student wellbeing frameworks.
Experience coaching and mentoring teachers to improve curriculum delivery and pedagogical practice.
