The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you deliver culturally appropriate criminal law advice, representation and early‑intervention services in line with ALS legislation, policies and professional obligations. You exercise sound autonomous judgment, undertake merit assessments in complex matters, and provide high‑quality advocacy and guidance to ensure strong, culturally safe legal services for Aboriginal clients. Each day, you will:

Lead and support legal service delivery alongside the Deputy Principal Solicitor, including staff guidance, policy implementation and operational coordination.
Manage and supervise staff and resources through workload allocation, performance development, recruitment, induction and ongoing professional support.
Oversee complex criminal law matters including committals, District and Supreme Court work, and representation across all relevant jurisdictions.
Coordinate daily practice operations such as diary management, court schedules, team meetings, CLE sessions and efficient case flow management.
Strengthen community engagement and policy work through community legal education, stakeholder liaison and contribution to ALS criminal law policies and guidelines.
Ensure compliance and uphold professional standards by maintaining current legal knowledge, meeting conduct obligations and supporting safe, equitable workplace practices, including required travel.

Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated legal leader with a strong commitment to delivering culturally appropriate criminal law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Combining expert advocacy with effective team leadership, you mentor legal professionals, manage complex matters, and champion access to justice with integrity, professionalism, and respect for Aboriginal cultural values. Key strengths include:

Strong understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, communities, and cultural practices, with a commitment to culturally safe service delivery.
Current NSW Practising Certificate with demonstrated experience in criminal law, advocacy, and legal representation.
Proven leadership experience managing legal teams, supervising staff, allocating workloads, and driving performance outcomes.
Extensive knowledge of criminal law, court procedures, and the representation of Aboriginal clients, including briefing and instructing Counsel.
Exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement, negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and uphold Workplace Health & Safety, ethical, and diversity standards.
