The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you’ll play a key role in leading and delivering culturally safe criminal law services, providing expert advice and representation to Aboriginal clients. Oversee the Broken Hill practice while driving early intervention, outreach, and community-focused legal support. Each day, you will:

Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team, managing workloads, resources, and performance
Conduct complex criminal matters with high-quality advocacy, preparation, and legal research
Represent Aboriginal clients across Local, District, Children’s and other courts
Mentor, recruit, and develop staff, fostering strong professional growth and retention
Coordinate court schedules, diaries, and daily operations for an efficient legal practice
Engage with communities and stakeholders, delivering legal education and strengthening relationships

Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated senior leader who understands and respects the cultural, social, and historical context that shapes the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You bring both technical excellence and a deep commitment to community and justice. Key strengths include:

A current NSW Practising Certificate with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in Criminal Law.
Demonstrated knowledge, appreciation of cultural and social needs and experience in legal representation for Aboriginal clients in criminal matters and capacity to brief and instruct Counsel.
Sound knowledge of and demonstrated experience in conducting high quality carriage of an EAGP practice combined with complex criminal defended hearing work.
Proven ability to manage the day-to-day activities of legal service offices within various locations including the supervision or mentorship of staff, the allocation of work, and management of workloads and regular reviews of performance.
Knowledge and understanding of relevant criminal law legislation, case law and court proceedings to effectively represent and advocate for Aboriginal clients, including demonstrating respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices in dealing with clients, their families, communities and staff.
Demonstrated excellence in consultation, interpersonal, influencing, motivational, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, combined with strong people management skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to meet deadlines, work without supervision and manage a diverse workload.
Demonstrated commitment to the effective implementation of Workplace Health & Safety and Ethical and Diversity practices in the workplace.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to conduct community legal education and to prepare court documents, correspondence, submissions and other written materials.
