The Opportunity

The Mental Health Nurse (Clinician) plays a vital role within Monash University’s multidisciplinary health and wellbeing team, delivering expert mental health triage and acute clinical support within an accredited medical practice environment. This position provides timely, evidence-based interventions and contributes to the delivery of mental health programs and psychological literacy initiatives that support the safety, wellbeing and success of students and staff across the University community.

This position will be responsible for delivering expert mental health assessment, triage and short-term clinical interventions for students and staff presenting with acute and complex mental health concerns. The role will exercise advanced clinical judgement to assess and manage medical and organisational risk, provide referrals and case coordination with internal and external stakeholders, and support high-risk individuals through person-centred, trauma-informed care. The position will contribute to mental health literacy initiatives, including the facilitation of Mental Health First Aid and safeTALK programs, while also providing secondary consultation to clinicians and advice to the wider University community. In addition, the role will maintain accurate clinical documentation, contribute to compliance and quality assurance processes, and support collaborative service delivery across CAPS and University Health Services.

To be successful in this role you will have extensive experience in acute mental health assessment and management within a clinical, tertiary or emergency triage setting, supported by postgraduate qualifications in Mental Health Nursing and current AHPRA registration with ACMHN credentials. You will demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, counselling and risk management skills, with the ability to engage effectively with individuals in crisis using evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches. Strong communication and stakeholder relationship management capabilities are essential, along with the ability to work independently while contributing positively within a multidisciplinary team. Experience in delivering mental health education and high-level competence in clinical systems, case management and reporting will also be highly regarded.

This role will be required to work on site across three days per week
