About Dandenong ICU
Dandenong ICU is a large metropolitan general intensive care unit located in the Southeast of Melbourne. It is known for its acute case mix and outstanding working culture.
Early works for a new 16 bed ICU will commence towards end of 2026, as part of the Dandenong Hospital modernisation re-development.

About the Role
Up to 2 Transition Year (TY) Trainee positions will be offered at the Dandenong Hospital ICU, aimed to fulfill the training requirements of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). It is a 12-month training post that bridges the gap between a supervised registrar and independent consultant practice in intensive care. Trainees manage critically ill patients, supervise junior medical staff, engage in non-clinical activities like research and teaching, and develop the autonomy and communication skills required for a consultant intensivist role. An innovative opportunity exists to develop subspecialised skills as Infectious Disease TY or Artificial Intelligence TY scholar.
Unique Transition Scholar Program
The Dandenong Hospital Critical Care Infectious Disease Translational Scholar Program
An innovative 12-month subspecialty training opportunity for a CICM Transitional Year trainee within Monash Health. This first-of-its-kind program in Australia offers a structured, longitudinal experience in critical care infectious diseases, combining clinical exposure, academic development, and translational research.
Based at Dandenong Hospital ICU, with rotations across Monash Medical Centre, Casey Hospital, and the Victorian Heart Hospital, the program provides broad exposure to complex infectious disease presentations, including sepsis, multidrug-resistant infections, transplant-related complications, and ECMO-associated infections.
Participants benefit from dedicated non-clinical time and dual supervision from ICU and Infectious Diseases specialists, supporting development in antimicrobial stewardship, advanced pharmacology, microbiology, and infection prevention. participation in quality improvement initiatives and completion of a scholarly project with opportunities for presentation and publication.

Dandenong Hospital ICU Artificial Intelligence Translational Scholar Program
Dandenong Hospital ICU is offering a unique 12-month Artificial Intelligence (AI) Translational Scholar Program designed for CICM Transitional Year trainees seeking to develop advanced expertise in critical care innovation. This structured program combines clinical practice with dedicated scholarly development, including 10 hours per week of protected non-clinical time.
Delivered in partnership with Monash Health Digital Health and the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, the program provides a rare opportunity to bridge frontline intensive care with cutting-edge AI research and implementation.
Participants will gain hands-on experience in clinical decision support, predictive analytics, digital health systems, and the safe integration of AI into ICU workflows. The curriculum includes exposure to real-world data environments, human-AI interaction, and clinical informatics, alongside completion of a substantial scholarly project suitable for presentation and publication.
The program features dual supervision from ICU and digital health leaders, with optional academic mentorship. Trainees may also align their participation with postgraduate AI study pathways at Monash University.
This competitive program offers a significant career advantage, equipping trainees with demonstrable leadership, academic output, and subspecialty expertise in AI—key differentiators for future intensive care consultants.
About You
To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge:
- Clinical Expertise: Ability to define and manage complex clinical problems in critically ill patients.
- Communication: Effective communication skills, empathy, and trust with patients and their families.
- Autonomy: Demonstrate clinical autonomy under the guidance of supervising intensivists, with the level of autonomy adjusting based on the trainee's capabilities.
Mandatory requirements of the role:
- Primary medical degree (MBBS) or equivalent
- All candidates will require Australian working rights
- Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) - Employee Working with Children's Check
- Current Drivers Licence
- Fellowship of College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM)
