No two shifts are the same, providing exposure to a diverse range of patients, specialties and clinical situations.
The successful candidate will work closely with Junior Medical Officers, nursing staff and multidisciplinary teams throughout the hospital, becoming a valued resource for after hours patient care. The role offers a high degree of autonomy while still being supported by the medical workforce and hospital leadership team.
What makes this position unique is the opportunity to work within a team that is passionate about supporting doctors in training and improving the experience of both staff and patients. The role was developed in response to feedback from Junior Medical Officers and reflects John Hunter Hospital's commitment to innovative workforce solutions, education and staff wellbeing.

About you:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the role requires regular interaction with patients, nursing staff, Junior Medical Officers and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
The successful candidate will be able to prioritise competing demands, remain calm under pressure and demonstrate sound clinical judgement when responding to requests across multiple wards and specialties. A commitment to patient-centred care, professionalism and teamwork is critical.
Non-negotiable attributes include:
- Demonstrated competence in IV cannulation and blood collection or willingness to undertake on the job training for these procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work independently while recognising when to seek assistance.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- A professional, flexible and collaborative approach to patient care.
- Commitment to providing safe, high-quality care in a dynamic clinical environment.
How you'll be supported:
The successful applicant will receive a comprehensive orientation to John Hunter Hospital, including local policies, procedures, escalation pathways and clinical workflows relevant to the role. They will be introduced to key stakeholders and supported to become familiar with the hospital environment, after-hours processes and expectations of the position.
The role has been designed to work closely alongside the Junior Medical Officer workforce, providing opportunities for ongoing support and mentorship from experienced clinicians. The successful candidate will report operationally to the Director of Prevocational Education and Training and will receive day to day support from the JMO Manager, both of whom are committed to fostering a positive and supportive working environment.
During the orientation period, the successful applicant will be provided with training in relevant clinical systems, documentation requirements and local processes. Additional support will be available to ensure confidence in navigating the hospital and managing the demands of an after hours role.
Ongoing professional development opportunities include access to Hunter New England Health education resources, mandatory and optional learning programs, and participation in relevant clinical education activities. Working within a large tertiary referral centre also provides exposure to a broad range of specialties, patient presentations and multidisciplinary teams, supporting the ongoing development of clinical knowledge and skills.
