Primary objective
Provide statutory and non-statutory welfare services to individuals, groups and communities under the Department of Children and
Families Programs including but not limited to child protection, family support, youth support, out of home care, carer assessments, and
the reduction of domestic and family violence.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Responsible for the delivery of case work and case management services to clients, including the management of more complex cases

requiring liaison with other Agency and non-Government Organisations.
2. Maintain a high level of services to clients through the provision of professional expertise and demonstrated best practice in the

delivery of statutory welfare services.
3. Undertake statutory responsibilities and exercise delegations under the Care and Protection of Children Act in accordance with

departmental policies and procedures.
4. Provide support, training and education to staff on program and practice issues to enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding of

programs.
5. Ensure the availability of reliable data through the accurate and timely recording of information on the Territory Families client

information and case management systems.
6. Participate in the After Hours Service and assist in delivering the Department’s statutory welfare group responses in accordance with

the Emergency Management Act.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree of an Australian tertiary institution, which gives eligibility for membership of the Australian Community Workers Association,

the Australian Association of Social Workers, or the Australian Psychological Society, or equivalent or Diploma of Child, Youth and
Family Intervention and Vocational Graduate Certificate in Community Services Practice (Statutory Child Protection) or Graduate
Certificate in Safe Communities (Child Protection).

2. Extensive experience commensurate with the duties of the position, including highly developed professional skills in conducting
strength based assessments, developing and delivering effective interventions, and a demonstrated capacity to apply best practice
principles.

3. Significant experience working within a legislative framework and a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex legislation.
4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team setting.
5. Demonstrated highly developed oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including ability to develop and deliver formal

and informal training for staff and the preparation of court reports.
6. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures, including a demonstrated knowledge and understanding

of Aboriginal culture, family and community structures.
7. High level organisational skills including the ability to work independently manage time effectively and contribute to the professional

development and learning needs of colleagues.
8. Demonstrated skills in the use of computers and an ability and willingness to undertake training in the program’s computer based data

entry system.
9. Preparedness to travel in 4WD vehicles and light planes as required and ability to undertake travel including overnight stays as

necessary.
10. Current Northern Territory driver’s licence or the ability to obtain.

Desirable
1. In the order of five years relevant experience and that this will include at least six months experience of child protection work and at

least six months experience of working with children in care.
