An exciting opportunity has become available for a Systems Engineer to join our Hardware Engineering team. This role offers the chance to work across the full product lifecycle, contributing to the design, development, integration, installation and support of cutting-edge rail inspection systems deployed around the world.
As a Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in the development and continuous improvement of Cordel’s hardware systems and integration solutions.
Working closely with engineers across multiple disciplines, you’ll contribute to product design, prototype new concepts, support field deployments, troubleshoot complex technical issues and help bring innovative solutions from concept through to real-world implementation.

This is a full-time, office-based position located in Newcastle.
Systems Design & Development
- Contribute to the design and development of future hardware products and systems.
- Prototype and evaluate new system concepts to support product innovation.
- Assist in the design and development of bespoke integration components.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to develop practical and scalable technical solutions.
- Support product improvement initiatives and ongoing engineering projects.
Integration & Field Support
- Participate in the installation and integration of hardware systems in operational environments.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve issues with deployed and production systems.
- Support maintenance, upgrades and continuous improvement activities for existing products.
- Provide technical support and guidance to internal stakeholders and customers.
- Assist with testing and validation of new hardware components and system designs.
Project Delivery & Collaboration
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and deliver successful outcomes.
- Monitor project progress and identify potential risks or technical issues.
- Collaborate with software, hardware and product teams throughout the engineering lifecycle.
- Contribute to Agile project delivery and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation relating to designs, installations and maintenance activities.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, engineering practices and industry trends.
- Contribute ideas that improve product performance, reliability and customer outcomes.
- Support the ongoing evolution of Cordel’s hardware and systems engineering capability.
You are a practical and technically curious engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years’ relevant engineering experience, ideally in hardware integration, product development, systems engineering or mechanical design.
- Proficiency in CAD software, with Autodesk Fusion 360 highly regarded.
- Experience with electronics design, assembly and debugging.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer literacy and technical documentation skills.
- Experience working within Agile environments or project delivery frameworks.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
Desirable Experience
- Experience within the rail industry.
- Familiarity with railway compliance requirements and standards.
- Experience supporting field-based installations and hardware deployments.
- Exposure to sensor technologies, data acquisition systems or industrial hardware products.
