Primary objective
Provide professional leadership and direction in strengthening youth justice and develop a culture of practice excellence through
ongoing quality improvement activities.

Context statement
This position will be working with the Community Youth Justice northern team which includes Katherine, Nhulunbuy and
communities in between where clients reside in community. The Community Youth Justice team work with youth across various
environments such as living in community, bail supported facilities and youth detention.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead, influence and support staff to exercise best practice service delivery and decision making in operational policy and practice

matters including complex casework issues.
2. Contribute at a high level to practice reform by building regional capability in youth justice in conjunction with other Practice

Leaders and relevant regional staff.
3. Model and apply therapeutic, trauma informed principles to young person-centred collaborative through care planning in youth

justice.
4. Identify areas of high risk and/or requiring practice improvement and work with relevant leadership teams to implement

innovative solutions and strategies to strengthen practice capability in these areas and promote continuous improvement in
practice.

5. Implement professional development strategies and activities including mentoring, coaching and training to address identified
needs.

6. Conduct internal practice audits and intensive case reviews to assess practice against legislation, policies, procedures and
practice standards.

7. Collate and analyse practice information to identify thematic practice trends and issues.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree of an Australian tertiary institution, which gives eligibility for membership of the Australian Community Workers

Association, the Australian Association of Social Workers, or the Australian Psychological Society, or equivalent OR Diploma of
Child, Youth and Family Intervention AND Vocational Graduate Certificate in Community Services Practice (Statutory Child
Protection) OR Graduate Certificate in Safe Communities (Child Protection).

2. Demonstrated ability to apply culturally safe and responsive youth justice and child protection practice for Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander children, young people and their families.

3. Sound knowledge and understanding of legislation, policies, procedures, practice frameworks, models and issues relating to the
provision of contemporary youth justice and child protection services and the ability to apply that knowledge.

4. Proven ability to review complex case decisions, analyse information, problem solve and develop evidence-based
recommendations.

5. Demonstrated high-level oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to effectively negotiate
outcomes, manage conflict and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external
stakeholders.

6. Demonstrated ability to review and develop systems, processes and programs/services to address identified needs.
