The ACT Courts and Tribunal (ACTCT) are looking for an enthusiastic and culturally engaged individual to join the Circle Sentencing team as Court Coordinator for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of ongoing employment.
Circle Sentencing Courts are an initiative within the ACT Courts. They are designed to provide a more inclusive and restorative approach to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These Courts involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders in the sentencing process, recognising the importance of culture and community.
As Court Coordinator, you will administer the day-to-day operations of the Circle Sentencing Courts. You will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the Courts, creating a positive impact for defendants, families and community.
You will need good interpersonal and organisational skills, along with understanding of the cultural needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
You will work directly with clients and their families, Elders, support services, legal representatives, and community organisations to help deliver culturally safe and solution-focused outcomes. The role also involves liaising with internal and external stakeholders, contributing to policy and procedural development, and supporting broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice initiatives within ACTCT.
Professional / Technical Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrated ability to liaise sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including a sound understanding of their culture and issues that affect them, especially in relation to the criminal justice system.

Highly developed communication skills, emotional intelligence and resilience.

Ability to provide culturally considered advice on complex policy, process and procedural issues, with a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues and the criminal justice system.

Sound and informed decision-making skills that demonstrate judgment and environmental awareness.

Ability to manage quality client service with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

Proven track record of setting and delivering on strategic and operational priorities.
Behavioural Capabilities

Demonstrated capability in leading and managing teams and/or volunteer groups, especially in a culturally sensitive environment. This includes the ability to manage competing priorities concurrently and meet deadlines.

Understanding of the factors contributing to over representation of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal justice system and experience in responding within a trauma-informed, culturally considered, and restorative approach.

Sound stakeholder engagement, and an ability to foster and maintain effective, solution focused relationships.

Ability to analyse client and stakeholder needs, and develop, review and promote client services both within operational and strategic capacities.
Eligibility/Other requirements:
This is an Identified position in accordance with Section 27(4) of the Public Sector Management Act 1994 and is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity is considered essential and therefore confirmation of cultural identity may be requested.
Desirable Skill/Experience:
- The successful candidate will be required to undergo a National Criminal History check.

Note: This is a temporary position available immediately for up to 12 months with the possibility of permanency.
A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
